Honda News

ASIMO, Honda's humanoid robot, has finally impressed enough Hollywood producers to get his own show. The running, walking, talking, stair-climbing Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) takes the stage at Honda's ASIMO Theater in the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland. You'll be treated to a 15-minute show in which ASIMO interacts with a live host and shows off how he will act when he finally makes it into private homes. Apparently, one of ASIMO's principal roles in our robotic future will be to "act as a servile companion to those most in need of physical assistance."

BREAKING! Honda Stream may appear in North America in 2009!

There are sources that are reporting that the next-generation Honda Stream may be sold in the U.S. Having just been redesigned last year, the next Stream won't arrive until 2009, and even then we doubt it will receive anything more than a refreshening. Nevertheless, Honda appears intent to make some money off of this MPV that's based on the same platform as the Civic and CR-V. It's been a big hit in Japan since it debuted in 2000, though the recent redesign has met with mixed reviews. Though the JDM version can seat up to seven or eight people, sources reports the U.S. version will probably get only two rows of seats. In Japan, the Stream is available with either a 1.8L i-VTEC engine and five-speed auto or a 2.0L i-VTEC engine mated to a CVT transmission. Whether those engines will be offered in the U.S. in unknown, though we would expect at least the larger of the two motors to make the journey to our shores. Considering Honda's success with the Odyssey in the minivan segment, the Stream may do very well in the U.S. It appears smaller than a minivan, but larger than a Mazda5. The current trend of segment-bending tall wagons and CUVs could carry the Stream right along.

Honda Civic News

UPDATE ON CANADIAN CSX/CIVIC NEWS:

There will be a 2008 Canadian Acura CSX with two models, Premium and Type-S. The former Canadian Acura CSX Base/Touring model with be replaced by a lower priced Canadian edition of the Honda Civic EX-L (EX with Leather). At this moment it is unsure whether or not there will be a Canadian Honda Civic Si Sedan for Canadians because it would directly affect sales of the Canadian Acura CSX Type-S.

Other changes for the Canadian Honda Civic is that A/C is now a seperate, optional option for the DX and the DX-G model remains in Canada. There may be an optional navigation for US ONLY HONDA CIVIC EX, Canadian/US Honda Civic EX-L and Canadian/US Honda Civic Si. Other changes for the 2008 Honda Civic in North America is a 60/40 spilt folding rear seat on all models except for DX (previously the 60/40 spilt was only standard on EX), a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System on all models and a new Civic Si MUGEN model for US.

Honda Civic Hybrid

The Honda Civic Hybrid has been named Germany's most ecological car by the respected Verkehrsclub Deutschland which is a major transport and environment organization in Germany in its Envriomental Car Ratings for 2007/2008. As part of its rating process the VCD sought out the quietest vehicles with the lowest fuel consumption and the lowest level of emissions. The Civic Hybrid met all the organization’s requirements for environmental compatibility and comfortable driving, and it was highly rated for its outstanding quietness. This is the second year running that the VCD has chosen the Civic Hybrid as its environmental winner. In 2006 the vehicle beat 350 contenders to secure the coveted first place in the VCD Environmental Car Ratings. In addition, the judges rated the Civic Hybrid as the top car in the compact class. The Civic Hybrid is the latest embodiment of Honda's long-term commitment to the development of environmentally friendly technologies that are also fun to drive. The vehicle combines a 95 HP petrol engine with a 20 HP electric motor. In addition, the internal combustion engine is switched off when the car comes to a stop. These factors contribute greatly to the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions, particularly in city traffic. With a standard fuel consumption of 4.6 litres per 100 km (51.13 mpg) and emissions of 109 grams of CO2 per km (174.4 g/mile), its performance is significantly within future statutory emission and fuel economy limits.

Honda Raises Its Car Production Capacity

Honda plans to raise its car production capacity to about 4.7 million units a year in 2010 while keeping the actual output smaller to better deal with unexpected demand increases such as the Honda Fit. Honda is planning to actually prduce a sell 4.5 million cars in 2010. The plan would mark a shift in Honda's strategy, as Honda has been producing nearly at full capacity. With demand for cars growing fast in newly emerging economies and changes in market trends becoming more rapid, Honda is trying to create a more flexible production system.

2008 Honda S2000 Introduction/Overview

As a quintessential roadster-style sports car, the Honda S2000 is a performance icon for the Honda brand that combines racetrack-inspired performance with everyday usability. The front engine, rear-wheel-drive S2000 rewards driving enthusiasts with a potent 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder engine and a precise, short-throw 6-speed manual transmission, along with tenacious handling and an ideal 50/50 weight balance.

The renowned high-revving engine delivers 237 horsepower at 7800 rpm and 162 lb-ft. of torque at 6800 rpm. Perfectly complementing the engine's output characteristics is a compact, longitudinally-mounted, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that features a direct linkage for precise shifting and quick throws. Additional performance features include a front and rear double wishbone suspension, electric power steering and a torque-sensing limited slip rear differential.

The Honda S2000 comes with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, ABS and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). (VSA is the Honda brand name for electronic stability control.) While VSA serves to effectively enhance driver control during acceleration, braking, and cornering, the system can be disabled with the touch of a button when conditions warrant. Air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD audio system are standard equipment on the Honda S2000.

New for 2008, the Honda S2000 has revised spring and damper tuning that subtly influences steering feel and high speed vehicle behavior. Inside, the minor changes include revised instrument panel meters and minor revisions to the seat design. Also, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) has been added.

The 2.2-liter, DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder engine produces 237 horsepower and 162 lb-ft. of torque while meeting California's Low-Emission Vehicle 2 (LEV-2) standards. Honda's innovative VTEC advanced variable valve-timing system operates the engine's 16 valves in both intake and exhaust modes. This system is compact and tailored to the high-output, high-rpm operating characteristics of the Honda S2000 engine. Torque and horsepower are optimized over the engine's entire operating range to simultaneously provide low-end power and top-end performance near the engines 8000 rpm redline. The Honda S2000 is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in less than six seconds.

The aluminum-alloy cylinder head maximizes space efficiency with a compact gear and chain-drive system for the dual overhead camshafts. The ancillary drive system for the alternator, water pump and air-conditioning compressor also use a space-efficient design.
The engine's highly rigid, aluminum-alloy cylinder block features long-wearing FRM (Fiber-Reinforced Metal) cylinder liners.

Lightweight pistons are made of forged aluminum alloy and the forged-steel connecting rods and crankshaft are heat-treated for added toughness. Numerous friction-reduction techniques, such as, roller-bearing cam followers and advanced bearing materials, are used in the engine.
A large-capacity, low-restriction intake system and low back-pressure exhaust system contribute to the engine's overall efficiency and help create the Honda S2000's audible performance demeanor. The exhaust system uses a high-efficiency metal-honeycomb catalyst. A direct-ignition system and Honda-programmed multi-point fuel injection contribute to the S2000's engine achieving its LEV-2 status.

A 6-speed, manual transmission uses closely-spaced low gear ratios on gears one through five, and a "tall" sixth speed gear for relaxed highway cruising (65mph = 3500 rpm). The transmission is a compact design and features a direct mechanical shift linkage with short throws between each gear. A Torsen limited-slip differential distributes torque to both rear wheels simultaneously or variably as traction conditions permit.

The Honda S2000 is an open-topped, two-seat roadster with a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The Honda S2000 uses steel body construction with the exception of the hood, which is aluminum. The body and frame are a hybrid monocoque structure. The "High X-Bone Frame" is formed by the body's high side sills, and diagonal (X) bracing underneath the body. A large central tunnel runs down the center of the cockpit. The tunnel serves as the backbone and main load-bearing structure for the vehicle, as well as a housing for the transmission and driveshaft.

The exterior styling of the S2000's body is designed to appear angular, modern and sleek. The long hood and flared front fenders create the impression of lowness and mass. High-intensity discharge (HID) projector headlights highlight the front of the vehicle, while the taillight design follows a similar theme with large, round multi-LED taillights set in clear-lens housings.

The Honda S2000's front and rear double wishbone suspension systems are a compact in-wheel design, similar to the type used on racing cars. At each wheel, upper and lower A-shaped wishbone links carry suspension loads directly to the subframes. Front 215/45 R17 87W and rear 245/40 R17 91W tires are mounted on newly-designed and lighter weight 17-inch alloy wheels. The 11.8-inch vented front brake discs and 11.1-inch solid rear brake discs are calibrated to provide world-class stopping power and a solid, linear brake feel. Coil springs and mono-tube, gas-pressurized dampers (remote reservoirs in the rear) are used at each wheel. Front and rear stabilizers help keep body roll to a minimum.

Electronic stability control is provided through the VSA system, and an ABS system is standard equipment. An electrically-assisted power steering system provides more power steering assist at low speeds for ease-of-maneuvering. As vehicle speed increases, less power assist is supplied, giving the steering a more direct feel.

For 2008, the Honda S2000 suspension has been tuned with new spring, damper and stabilizer bar settings to further enhance road-holding and steering feel.
The Honda S2000's driver-oriented interior is designed to be functional in much the same way as a purpose-built racecar with excellent outward visibility and simplicity of controls. High sides reinforce the cockpit-like feel of the interior. The seats contour to provide excellent lateral support during aggressive turns. Controls such as the steering, brakes and clutch, operate with a high level of precision and a direct, commanding feel. The aluminum and leather-wrapped shift knob, racing-inspired digital instrument display and engine-start button further highlight the vehicle's racing pedigree.

The list of comfort and convenience features includes a power-operated convertible top that opens or closes in approximately six seconds, power door locks, power windows, cruise control, Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System and keyless entry for the doors and the trunk. The following features are standard on the Honda S2000: air conditioning with micron air filtration and an AM/FM/CD audio system with eight speakers (including four speakers located in the roll bar hoops behind the seats) and remote-operated audio controls.

For 2008, a few noteworthy changes have occurred to the interior on all Honda S2000 models. The instrument panel has a revised meter design for the fuel and temperature gauges, adding to the aesthetics of the display. Specifically, the fuel and temperature meters now reside along the arc formed by the tachometer instead of a semi-circle configuration below and to the right of the tachometer.

The Honda S2000 has dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags (SRS) for the driver and passenger, three-point seat belts with load limiters and pre-tensioners, roll bar hoops and reinforced windshield posts. For pedestrian safety, the hood hinges and windshield-wiper pivots are designed to collapse and minimize the severity of a head injury to a pedestrian. Vehicle Stability Assist, ABS and a tire pressure monitoring system are standard equipment.

2008 Honda S2000 Club Racer Introduction/Overview

Compared to the S2000, the factory-tuned Honda S2000 CR provides more aggressive and track-oriented suspension settings, increased body and chassis rigidity, overall weight reduction, and aerodynamic spoilers tuned for reduced lift and enhanced chassis balance at high speeds. A removable aluminum hardtop replaces the convertible soft top.

The aerodynamic package reduces lift through large and specially-tuned front and rear spoilers. Exclusive chassis features include a quicker steering ratio, more aggressive Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires (in place of RE050 tires), a larger rear tire size, firmer springs and dampers, larger stabilizer bars and the S2000's new wheel design in Kaiser Silver. A rear body brace has been added to the area previously occupied by the soft top, resulting in additional rigidity. Relative to the base 2008 Honda S2000, cumulative weight savings total 51 pounds (hardtop installed) and 99 pounds (hardtop removed).

The exclusive interior is highlighted by black fabric seating surfaces with yellow stitching, a unique spherical aluminum shifter and carbon fiber-style trim panels. To save weight, air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD audio system are only available as factory-installed optional equipment.

(The S2000 CR sport muffler is tuned for a more aggressive exhaust note.) The exhaust system uses a high-efficiency metal-honeycomb catalyst.

The Honda S2000 CR adds extensive aerodynamic body work that functions to significantly reduce lift and enhance chassis balance at high speeds. An underbody front spoiler and a trunk lid-mounted rear spoiler combine to lower the Coefficient of Lift (Cl) by as much as 70-80 percent depending on the roof configuration. Downforce is created by the rear spoiler when the hardtop is installed as the contour of the roof is designed to influence aerodynamics at the rear of the vehicle.

The Honda S2000's front and rear double wishbone suspension systems are a compact in-wheel design, similar to the type used on racing cars. At each wheel, upper and lower A-shaped wishbone links carry suspension loads directly to the subframes. Front and rear 255/40 R17 94W (unique to CR) tires are mounted on newly-designed and lighter weight 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Honda S2000 CR suspension tuning goes even further by taking advantage of body rigidity enhancements made possible with the exclusive removable hardtop configuration and by adding stiffer springs and sway bars, and firmer dampers. Specially-developed steering gearbox stiffeners on the S2000 CR provides an even more direct, reflexive feel, and is further supplemented by a quicker steering ratio of 13.8:1 (compared to 14.9:1 for the S2000).

The list of comfort and convenience features includes a power-operated convertible top that opens or closes in approximately six seconds (replaced by a removable aluminum hardtop on the S2000 CR), power door locks, power windows, cruise control, Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System and keyless entry for the doors and the trunk. The following features are standard on the Honda S2000 and available on the S2000 CR: air conditioning with micron air filtration and an AM/FM/CD audio system with eight speakers (including four speakers located in the roll bar hoops behind the seats) and remote-operated audio controls.

The Honda S2000 CR interior follows traditional race car themes with fabric seating surfaces highlighted by yellow stitching. Synthetic suede bolsters enhance lateral grip. A spherical aluminum shift knob on the S2000 CR rests 12.6 mm lower for a 6 percent reduction in shift stroke compared to the regular Honda S2000 cylindrical shift knob (aluminum/leather wrapped). Additionally, shift load effort increases by 10 percent for even more direct feedback when engaging a gear. The Honda S2000 CR instrument panel meters include a "peak-power indicator." When the engine is operating at peak power, a round, green light illuminates to the right of the digital speedometer.

2008 Canadian Honda Accord Press Release

The new, redesigned 2008 Honda Accord comes to market with an expanded range of innovative technologies designed for greater efficiency, enhanced safety, and more power across the lineup of stylish sedans and coupes. The eighth-generation Accord truly exemplifies the "Honda Benefit" of providing Canadians a vehicle that is "green, safe, fun," and includes an emphasis on expressive styling, fun-to-drive performance and innovative packaging.

"During its 30-year history in Canada, the Honda Accord has been a perennial segment leader with average annual sales in excess of 24,000 units,"said Jim Miller, executive vice president of Honda Canada". Canadian buyers have exhibited passion for the refined features, strong performance and overall design of the Accord."

"With over 735,000 Accords sold to date since its introduction in 1976, the Accord has remained a clear choice for Canadians looking for high levels of dependability, quality and reliability - attributes that are hallmarks of the Accord. With a new level of engineering sophistication, the 2008 Accord is designed to exceed expectations with innovative technologies, a more spacious interior and increased power, while retaining good fuel efficiency and a fun-to-drive character that have always distinguished the Accord in the marketplace."

The Accord is available in sedan and coupe body styles with two variations of a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder and two iterations of the 3.5-litre V6 engine. The two 4 cylinder engines have 177 and 190 horsepower, respectively, with estimated city/highway fuel economy ratings of 9.4/6.5 L/100km (with manual transmission).

An available 3.5-litre i-VTEC V6 engine produces 268 horsepower - the most ever for any Accord - while introducing a new generation of fuel-saving advanced Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology and achieving low emissions. The VCM system operates in six-cylinder mode for power in and 4-and 3-cylinder modes for efficiency, resulting in an estimated city/highway fuel economy rating of 11.0/6.7 L/100 km. A VTEC (not A-VTEC, a VTEC) version of 3.5-litre V6 engine is featured in the Accord Coupe EX-L V6 with 6-speed manual transmission.

Another innovative technology for Accord is Variable Gear Ratio VGR steering. This new steering system uses variable mechanical ratio steering, in addition to variable power assist, to provide precise on-center feel and greater responsiveness at larger steering angles.

Premium quality with a spacious design describes the philosophy behind the Accord's interior. The larger interior is intended to provide "equal" seating comfort for front and rear passengers. There is increased rear legroom and width to allow the front seats to be positioned farther apart for a wide center.

Redesigned front bucket seats are larger, and feature substantial lateral support to complement the Accord's sporty side. The fold-down lockable rear seatback increases cargo-carrying versatility. The sedan includes a lockable pass-through perfect for skis. The larger Accord is expected to attract buyers who traditionally favor larger family cars.

The latest generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation Systemwith Bi-Lingual Voice Activation (available on EX-L) uses a larger 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. Features include the Zagat Survey guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions. Navigation-equipped models also include Bluetooth HandsFreeLink.

The Accord Sedan's exterior styling emphasizes both an athletic and dynamic feel with the sophistication of a timeless sedan form. Even though the Accord is larger in all dimensions, its torsional rigidity has increased by 20% as a result of advanced body construction. The Accord Coupe styling radically departs from the sedan with a more aggressive image. Its long hood, sleek roofline and muscular lines suggest power and enhanced agility. The EX-L Coupe with V-6 engine and 6-speed manualtransmission also features larger 18" aluminum alloy wheels, chrome door handles, front fog lights, dual exhaust finishers and rear lip spoiler.

The Accord Sedan rides on a longer wheelbase and is slightly longer than the 2007 model. The Accord Coupe wheelbase is also longer than the 2007 model. The longer wheelbases contribute to improved ride characteristics. The premium suspension design and wider track along with wider tire sizes and standard ABS and VSA are intended to enhance driver confidence and handling performance in all situations.

Through a comprehensive approach to vehicle safety, Honda seeks toprovide the highest level of occupant and pedestrian protection in all its cars and trucks, regardless of size or price. Every 2008 Accord integrates sophisticated safety technology that includes driver's and front passenger's dual-chamber side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System; side curtain airbags; and dual-stage, dual-threshold driver's and front passenger's airbags.

New for Accord is an Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure that enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. All Accords also feature active head restraints designed to help reduce the severity of neck injury in the event of a rear collision. Standard active safety features include Vehicle Stability Assist and four-wheel-disc anti-lock brake system with brake assist and electronic brake distribution. The on-sale date at Honda's 214 retailers across Canada is September 21. Pricing has not yet been announced.

2008 Honda Accord Overview Part 4

The Accord has always been considered a sporty performer among mainstream sedans and coupes, and for 2008 the Sedan and Coupe chassis were both developed to increase both driving enjoyment and passenger comfort. A performance-inspired double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension are designed to provide world-class chassis dynamics. The Accord Sedan wheelbase of 110.2 inches is 2.4 inches longer than the 2007 model, while the 62.2-inch front/rear track is 1.1 and 1.0 inches wider, respectively. The Accord Coupe wheelbase of 107.9 inches is 2.3 inches longer than the 2007 model (track is identical to sedan). The longer wheelbases contribute to improved ride characteristics. Ultimately, the premium suspension design and wider track (along with wider tire sizes, standard ABS and standard Vehicle Stability Assist) are intended to enhance driver confidence and handling performance in all situations.

2008 Honda Accord Overview Part 2

For many customers the Durability, Quality and Reliability (DQR) of the Honda Accord is what keeps them returning generation after generation. These fine qualities – and the resale or trade-in value they engender for the Accord – become a powerful purchase incentive. Virtually every major company that studies vehicle residual value have shown that the Accord typically has one of the highest residual values in the industry. As an end result, a high residual or resale value makes the true cost of ownership less than many lower-priced competitors.

The Accord has consistently been one of the top five best-selling vehicles in the U.S. for nearly two decades. As Honda's best-selling vehicle in U.S., Accord is the bedrock of the company. The sedan market in the U.S. is consistently strong, with annual sales in the neighborhood of 2,000,000 units, with Accord accounting for nearly one-fifth of all mid-size vehicles sold. Accord appeals directly to two of the growing segments in the automotive market – young couples and empty nesters. As these people seek sophistication and fun combined with great resale value and quality in their vehicles, Accord meets their needs and desires. At the same time it appeals to the more practical virtues of a great family vehicle.

In contrast, the Accord Coupe has historically appealed to singles, young couples without children and "empty nesters" that want to capture the spirit of driving that a coupe provides. Today's sports-coupe buyers want even more emphasis on sportiness and that is the reason why the 2008 Accord Coupe so visibly stands apart from the sedan – both visually and in handling performance.

Though the Accord Sedan has just over 120 cu-ft. total interior volume and is classified as a Large sedan by the EPA, its prime competition remains in the upper end of the EPA Midsize class.

The mid-size sedan segment is one of the most competitive in the entire automotive field with more than 20 unique model lines from manufacturers large and small all vying for customers' attention. With top-selling products achieving sales figures in the neighborhood of 400,000 units per year, broad appeal is essential to success. Likewise, design, engineering and quality must reach the highest standards. As with products across the auto industry, buyer expectations for mid-size sedans are evolving to favor products with more interior room and personality.

The primary competitors to the 2008 Honda Accord are the Toyota Camry and the Nissan Altima. The Accord Sedan is well positioned to compete with these vehicles with its expansive interior, more daring styling, excellent driving character, overall quality and high levels of safety. Beyond its direct competitors, the Accord Sedan also competes with a secondary set that includes the Nissan Maxima and Toyota Avalon. The primary competitor for the Accord Coupe is the Nissan Altima Coupe and Toyota Solara.

The Accord Sedan embraces a traditional three-box shape that emphasizes both a dynamic and athletic feel with the sophistication of a timeless sedan form. The design is intended to convey a prestigious presence toward family, friends and business associates in much the same way a good suit can be worn on totally different occasions with a consistent feeling of style and class.
The focal point for creating the exterior began with the belief that a sedan should reflect both American values and embrace values shared worldwide. Truly a global effort, the Accord design theme of "athletic dynamism" brings together contributions from Honda design centers in Italy, Germany, Japan and the United States.

Dimensionally, the Accord Sedan's overall length of 194.1 inches (4-cylinder models) is 3.0 inches longer than the 2007 model, the width of 72.7 inches is 1.1 inches wider, and the height of 58.1 inches is 0.9 inches taller. Even though the size is larger in every dimension, the vehicle's torsional rigidity has increased by 20% as a result of advanced body construction that uses 48% high-tensile steel – the most high-tensile steel by volume of any Accord to date. A significant benefit to the advanced body construction is that total vehicle weight increased only by approximately 5% despite the larger size, greater rigidity and added features.

The Accord Coupe styling radically breaks from the sedan with a uniquely aggressive image. Its long hood, sleek roofline and muscular lines suggest an even more powerful presence and a heightened agility compared to the sedan. Dimensionally, the Accord Coupe's overall length of 190.9 inches is 3.1 inches longer than 2007 model, its width of 72.8 inches is 1.2 inches wider, and its height of 56.4 inches is 0.6 inches higher. Compared to the 2008 Accord Sedan, the Accord Coupe is 3.2 inches shorter in length, 1.7 inches shorter in height and 0.1-inch wider.
An overview of the top Accord body highlights includes:

The 2008 Accord Sedan becomes more upscale and prestigious with a more substantial front end with distinctive 6-point grille, taller and longer hood line, more aggressive flared fenders, unique upper and lower style lines along the body side, and a dynamic roofline.

The 2008 Accord Coupe dramatically breaks from the Accord Sedan with unique body panels, glass and lighting that creates a rakish, aggressive appearance from its recessed grille and muscular wheel flares to the 18-inch wheels and projector-beam halogen headlights of the Coupe V-6.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) – The ACE™ body structure is the latest Honda unit-body construction design that optimizes the structure's ability to disperse crash energy in a frontal collision. The 2008 Accord Sedan and Coupe are projected to rate 5 Stars from NHTSA* for frontal crash tests and a "Good" rating in IIHS frontal crash tests.
New frame rail system – Positioning the frame rails inside the Accord's body structure floor (instead of underneath it) creates a nearly flat bottom under the car, providing greater aerodynamic efficiency and reduced under-floor turbulence.
Increased rigidity – New design techniques and widespread use of high-tensile steel make the 2008 model the most rigid Accord ever, yielding benefits in ride, handling and an overall reduction in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
More slender A-pillars – Provide a greater field of view without compromising strength.
Additional innovative 2008 Accord technologies include:
Repositioned fuel tank sits lower and farther forward than before for better weight distribution and a lower center of gravity.
Fuel tank size increased nearly 8% (18.5 gal. vs. 17.2 gal.).
Flat-blade windshield wipers provide modern and upscale look.

Premium quality with a simple, modern and spacious design describes the philosophy behind the Accord's interior. Rather than adding feature after feature to assault the senses with opulence, a variety of design techniques were used to enhance the feeling of width and space to express premium quality. Considerable attention was paid to interior shaping and detailing just as it was for the exterior, where the traditional three-box sedan form was enhanced by sculpting of the body panels. The exterior concept of using a beveled corner where the front bumper and fender meet is similarly applied to the lower part of the instrument panel to create a spacious feeling while entering the vehicle. Careful attention was paid to the symmetry of the exterior and interior of the vehicle – including sight lines related the dashboard height and the visual presence of the hood to the driver.

While the interior is larger than the previous-generation Accord, the fundamental reason for increasing its size is grounded in the goal of producing equal seating comfort for front and rear passengers. In other words, the vehicle provides a sense of true hospitality to all of its occupants.

Real differences in usable space can be noticed in the hip-point distance between front and rear passengers (+ 1.0 inch compared to the 2007 model).
Furthermore, the increased hip-point distance and lower floor allows rear occupant knee space to increase by three inches compared to 2007. By Honda's in-house measurements, the few sedans on the market with more rear knee space include the Mercedes Benz S550, BMW 750i and Lexus LS 460.

The wider interior (+1.5 inches), combined with a more compact lumbar support system (EX and above), allows the front seats to be positioned farther apart to allow for a 2.75 inch wider center console compared to the 2007 Accord. Not only does a wider console provide the obvious enhanced functionality, but it also conveys a sense of openness more commonly found on high-end luxury vehicles.

A traditional zone approach separates operation-related instruments (top) and information-related instruments (lower). At night, the controls are further separated by color to distinguish between climate controls (aqua green) and audio controls (white). Classically-styled gauges for the speedometer and tachometer are round (instead of being truncated at the bottom). The steering wheel was meticulously fashioned with a shape, size and mass consistent with the finest luxury automobiles.

Overall, the 2008 Accord Sedan has gained 3.3 cubic feet of interior space (120.0 cu-ft. total). Sedan customers traditionally value the comfort and utility of greater interior space, and as a result, the new Accord looks, feels, and simply is bigger. The Accord offers more interior space than its prime competitors in most dimensions. Building on Honda's already excellent reputation for interior styling (one of the significant strengths of the previous generation Accord), the new Accord has an even more upscale presence.

Key interior features and benefits include:
Large, comfortable size – Roomier than any previous Accord, for both front and rear passengers the Accord feels like it's a class above with a 120-cubic-foot EPA Large size interior (combined interior and trunk).
Sophisticated styling – Every Accord trim level has a dynamic and upscale presence, starting with a navigation system-style display screen on all vehicles – even those without navigation. The interior exudes high quality and refinement, right down to the tactile feel of interior paneling and available soft leather.
Advanced safety – The 2008 Accord and Accord Coupe feature a comprehensive array of passive safety features including six air bags, 3-point seat belts with front pretensioners and load limiters, and front Active Front Seat Head Restraints. (Please refer to the Safety tab for more information.)

The 2008 Accord features aspirational technology in impressive levels. The new-generation voice-activated Navigation System includes the Zagat Survey guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions, an 8-inch screen and an interface dial. The vehicle also includes the first use of Bluetooth HandsFreeLink in a Honda product.

Redesigned front bucket seats are larger, and feature substantial lateral support to complement the Accord's sporting side.

More 2008 Honda Accord Information

The 2008 Honda Accord's body uses 48% high-strength sheet steel for greater stiffness and reduced weight, compared to 39% in the previous-generation. This greater use of this steel (590 and 440 grade) reduces body weight while increasing rigidity, which pays dividends in ride, handling and interior quietness. This also helps the 2008 Accord target the top durability, quality and reliability (DQR) in its class.

New design techniques and the widespread use of high-strength sheet steel make the 2008 model the stiffest Accord ever, and yields benefits in ride, handling and overall durability. With the most high-strength steel of any Honda car in history, the 2008 Accord is stronger as well as larger, without imposing a significant weight increase. Specific improvements are found in the rear of the vehicle, where 33% greater vertical rigidity directly enhances ride quality and handling.

A summary of Accord's rigidity improvements compared to its predecessor include:
20% greater torsional rigidity
33% greater rear vertical rigidity
36% greater front horizontal rigidity

The 2008 Accord is the first vehicle to use Honda's new unit-body frame rail system. Positioning the stamped steel frame rails above and inside the Accord's body structure floor – instead of underneath it – creates a nearly flat bottom under the car. The result is greater aerodynamic efficiency for improved fuel mileage, and reduced interior noise that can result from air turbulence underneath the car. The Accord's new frame rail design does not compromise interior room.

The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is a pioneering Honda unit-body construction technology. Introduced to Accord for the first time in the 2008 model, it maximizes the body's ability to disperse crash energy in a frontal collision and is designed to deliver top safety ratings. The 2008 Accord Sedan and Coupe are projected to receive a 5 Star frontal impact rating from the NHTSA and a "Good" frontal crash safety rating from the IIHS.

Front and rear plastic bumper fascias on the V-6 models are uniquely sculpted for enhanced visual appeal.

More slender body A-pillars, constructed of high-strength steel, provide a greater field of view without compromising strength. Based on Honda internal measurements, the new A-pillars allow a greater effective visibility rate (the index for visibility during cornering) than either the Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima.

All Accord models use a dual door-seal system to reduce the possibility of wind noise or rain intrusion. To further reduce operating noise, the 200-hp four-cylinder and V-6 Accords feature under-hood noise insulators and acoustic engine covers. Accord Sedan and Coupe V-6 with automatic transmission, and all four-cylinder EX models, also feature a special Active Noise Control system.

Fuel capacity has increased to 18.5 gallons from 17.2 gallons, an increase of 8%. The most ever offered on Accord, the additional fuel capacity helps extend cruising range between fill-ups. Made of polypropylene resin, the tank is located farther forward than in the previous generation Accord, helping to improve mass centralization for better ride and handling, and rear-seat roominess.

Reducing audible wind noise was an important Accord engineering goal, particularly high-frequency noise that can be distracting and impede conversation. The flatter bottom of the car, together with careful tailoring of the body shape, window moldings, windshield wipers and outside mirror shapes, all play a part in reducing wind noise.

Aerodynamic efficiency is likewise improved. The coefficient of drag for the 2008 Accord is just over 0.31 Cd for the Sedan and 0.33 Cd for the Coupe. This compares favorably with the 0.34 Cd figure for the previous generation Accord. In addition, the Accord's coefficient of lift (Cl), which indicates how much body lift occurs at speed, drops from over 0.20 Cl to just over 0.17 Cl for the Sedan and 0.14 Cl for the Coupe.

Additional under-vehicle aerodynamic aids include a wide chin spoiler that directs air under the front subframe. Additional strakes are positioned ahead of the front and rear wheels, plus two additional deflectors that smooth airflow over the front suspension. An engine under-cover directs airflow under the engine, while two middle under-covers direct air around the edges of the fuel tank.

In addition to being lighter and wider, and offering a greater opening range, the moonroof operation is also improved. To tilt or slide the moonroof the driver or front passenger needs only to fully press the ceiling-mounted switch once (instead of pressing and holding it for several seconds). The moonroof fully opens or closes automatically. However if the operator wishes to only partially open or close the moonroof (such as to achieve partial ventilation), a lighter touch yields fully manual control. The moonroof can also tilt to provide ventilation. A pinch protection feature is built in, helping to ensure that the moonroof will not forcefully close if someone's hand or arm is positioned in the path of the moonroof. If an obstruction is detected, the moonroof mechanism will reopen the moonroof.

In addition to an auto up/down driver's window feature, every 2008 Accord model except the LX Sedan has an auto up/down feature for the front passenger's window. As with the moonroof, the power windows include a pinch-protection feature. All power side windows and the moonroof may be opened via the keyless remote. In addition, turning the key twice in the driver's door lock simultaneously closes the windows and moonroof.

The windshield wipers on the 2008 Accord Sedan and Coupe are tucked below the hood line, out of the direct airflow over the hood to reduce turbulence, aerodynamic drag and noise. The arms are unobtrusive to the driver's field of view, and their clean design allows air to flow past with less turbulence.

Large storage volume is a big selling feature for sedan customers. With 14.0 cu. ft. of storage space, the new 2008 Accord Sedan matches the excellent trunk volume of the previous generation. The exterior appearance of the trunk lid is improved by the elimination of the key cylinder. On all 2008 Accord models, the trunk is released via a lever located on the driver's side floor, or else by the trunk-release button on the remote.

Some of the target cargo capacities for the 2008 Accord Sedan include up to four typical suitcases or two large suitcases, four golf bags, a stroller or wheelchair, or a large ice chest. The lift-over height is a low 28 inches for the Sedan and 31 inches for the Coupe. The trunk is a generous 46.75 inches long in the Sedan and 46.5 inches long in the Coupe, allowing the storage of some surprisingly long items. Maximum trunk width is likewise impressive at 55.5 inches for both vehicles. In the Coupe, when the rear seat is folded down, the maximum storage length grows to 76.5 in. The Coupe trunk volume is 11.9 cu. ft.

The steel trunk lid has a composite garnish at the bottom rear, which can be replaced after a collision. This lowers repair costs to lend a more favorable profile for the Accord in IIHS repair-cost studies.

In keeping with its expressive nature, the 2008 Accord has more chrome-appearance accent pieces. On all V-6 models the door handles are of a chrome appearance vs. painted on the four-cylinder models. In addition, all Accord models except the LX Sedan have chrome plated muffler tips for a more sporty appearance.

2008 Honda Accord Engine Information

2.4 4 Cylinder i-VTEC Engine

3.5 V6 i-VTEC VCM Engine

There is a total of four available engines for the 2008 Honda Accord, 2 inline four-cylinder engines and two V6 engines. The base engine is a 2.4-liter i-VTEC inline four-cylinder powerplant in the LX Sedan and LX-P Sedan. With 177hp, this engine delivers an increase of 7% in horsepower compared to its predecessor, while operating on regular unleaded fuel (as before). The highly-efficient power plant meets Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) (Automatic Transmission only) or ULEV-2 emissions standards and delivers EPA-estimated City/Highway fuel economy of 21/311 mpg (Sedan AT).

In the Accord LX-S Coupe and all EX and EX-L models, an even more powerful inline four-cylinder engine is standard. With a high-flow muffler and reprogrammed Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder generates 190 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 162 lb-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Though it's by far the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever offered in a North American Accord, this powerplant is designed to run on regular gas, and also meets PZEV (Automatic Transmission only) or ULEV-2 emissions standards. With a 5-speed automatic transmission, it also delivers EPA-estimated City/Highway fuel economy of 21/311 mpg (Sedan Automatic Transmission) using the new 2008 EPA methodology. That makes it just as fuel efficient as the less-powerful four-cylinder engine found in the LX and LX-P Sedan.

Fuel economy ratings and horsepower are unchanged, but these engines comply with tougher PZEV requirements, in part, by virtue of a special i-VTEC system that leaves one exhaust valve closed in each cylinder at low rpm, and the use of new fuel injector and dual probe spark plugs that improve combustion, in addition to the near-zero evaporative emissions equipment.

Accord Coupe and Sedan V6 models equipped with 5-speed automatic transmissions are powered by a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 that is the most powerful engine ever offered in a Honda vehicle. It features a new generation of Honda's advanced Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) variable displacement technology with a special SOHC i-VTEC valvetrain that allows it to operate in three different modes. Depending on driving conditions, the engine operates on three, four or all six cylinders to help boost fuel economy or power as needed.
With a 16% increase in displacement compared to the previous 3.0-L V6, this new powerplant delivers 268 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 248 lb-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm, operating on regular unleaded fuel. That is a 10% increase in horsepower and a substantial 18% boost in torque as compared to the previous V6. The Accord V-6 meets PZEV (Automatic Transmission only) or ULEV-2 emissions standards. Though it is larger and more powerful than any engine ever offered in Accord, the V-6 returns EPA-estimated 19/29 City/Highway fuel economy, using the 2008 EPA methodology. That makes it more fuel efficient than the smaller, less powerful engine it replaces when 2007 and 2008 models are tested using the identical 2008 EPA fuel economy evaluation parameters.

The Accord EX-L V6 Coupe with 6-speed transmission has a unique variant of the Accord V6 that uses VTEC valve gear without VCM to achieve enhanced low- and midrange performance. This engine has the same peak horsepower and torque as the i-VTEC VCM engine, and meets ULEV-2 emissions standards. It is paired with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission for maximum performance and driving control.

Honda Builds New Head Office Campus in Canada

Honda Canada has announced that it will build a new head office campus in Markham, Ontario, north of Toronto, to house its growing sales, marketing and customer service operation teams. The new facility, with a tentative move-in date of summer 2009, will be built on land fronting Highway 404 north of Elgin Mills Road. "The new space allows for greater economic and operational efficiencies, while expanding our economic contribution to Canada," says Jim Miller, executive vice-president, Honda Canada Inc. 'Honda considered many options and decided on a municipality that complemented our business philosophy - speed to market, focus on customer service and driven by innovative solutions." The campus will house three separate but interconnected buildings, including a four-storey building for the head office - built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) "green" specifications - along with a technical centre accommodating research and development, and a one-storey parts distribution centre. The project's build and design will be completed through a joint partnership with ZAS + HOK architects.

Honda Civic again Canada's Best Selling Passenger Car for July 2007

The 2007 Honda Civic topped Canadian sales of passenger cars for July. What's also interesting about this list is for the first time, import brands emerged into the top ten list of light trucks with such vehicles like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV-4. Entry-level vehicles were up 2.1% in a flat market, a continuation of the trend that developed more than a decade ago. Consumers are still moving away from the middle of the market, with midsize family vehicles down 3.7%. This size of vehicle has lost almost 20 points of market share over the last decade and now accounts for only a third of the market. The figures show that, if fleet sales are taken out of the equation, retail consumers purchased almost 60 per cent entry-level vehicles this year, with midsize family vehicles down in the 20 per cent range.

What's different on this interior compared to the current version?
The centre console is now wider, buttons is now larger, climate control info has moved from above the navigation screen to below it. Overall the current vertical stack is more a horizontal stack. Well, what do you think about this design? Well, in my opinion the CD changer should be moved back to the top. Although the two tone interior with brushed metal-look trim looks tasteful although some woodgrain is appreciated.

Honda's Decline

Honda Motor Co. fell the most in five months on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, leading a decline among automakers as the yen rose to the highest in more than four months against the euro and dollar. Honda shares fell 140 yen, or 3.6%, to close at 3,780 yen. Toyota Motor Corp., fell 2.6% to 6,670 yen, while Nissan Motor Co., fell 2.6% to 1,119 yen. The value of earnings from exports declines when the yen strengthens against foreign currencies. Japan's biggest carmakers get as much as 65 percent of their operating profit from North America, according to analysts.

Top 10 Least Expensive Luxury Vehicles to Own
Cars at the lower end of the luxury class, like the Acura TSX, are the least costly to own because their lower starting prices minimize the effects of depreciation. Vincentric has put together list by estimating six expenses over five years: depreciation, interest and opportunity costs, fuel, maintenance and repairs, insurance, and taxes and fees. But bear in mind that Vincentric’s projected ownership costs are only estimates. Actual expenses will vary by region. “There are large variations in maintenance and repairs when you look at a state where costs of living are higher, because labor rates are higher,” Similarly, people living in high-tax states will likely pay more in vehicle taxes and other fees. Insurance rates also change by region, as do fuel prices, he says. All of these are factored into the five-year ownership costs used to rank the vehicles on our list.

Top 10 Least Expensive Luxury Vehicles to Own (With 5-year cost of ownership):

10. Lincoln MKZ: $55,011
9. Lexus ES 350: $54,585
8. Acura RDX: $54,502
7. Lexus IS 250: $53,220
6. Volvo V50: $52,906
5. Audi A3: $51,513
4. Saab 9-3 SportCombi: $51,499
3. Volvo S40: $51,484
2. Saab 9-3 Sedan: $50,282
1. Acura TSX: $47,084
IIHS Safety
In other news, the IIHS recently introduced ratings for luxury sedans in side-impact ratings. Among the highest ratings, the Acura RL was rated the highest safety rating among other luxury sedans in side-impact crash tests.

Honda's Customer Satisfaction Drops

After two years of consistent results of a consumer study on customer satisfaction, Honda's results have dropped this year. The American Customer Satisfaction Index on Tuesday released the results of its study of consumer durables and e-business sectors, which it measures every second quarter. The overall consumer satisfaction with automobiles grew 1 percent to a high of 82 on a 100-point scale. Index analysts said the uptick in motorists' satisfaction comes from greater satisfaction in domestic and European vehicle lines, offsetting declines in Asian manufacturers. Honda's satisfaction rating, slipped to 84 after receiving 86 ratings in 2005 and 2006.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index is based out of the National Quality Research Center at the University of Michigan. The index conducts customer interviews that measure expectations and perceived quality and value.

This is the Honda Accord Coupe EX V6 6MT. It looks like the 6-speed manual transmission will make it debut once again in the Accord Coupe V6. Although, it seems that with those wheels, this Accord Coupe looks more conservative without the current sporty 5-spoke wheels. But it's nice to see that fog lights are now applied to the Accords and that the centre console may be that of the same as in the RDX's. As you can see, it was parked beside a Civic Si, you can compare and contrast the differences. The rear ends of both vehicles looks similar.

J.D Power Vehicle Dependability

There are three non-premium nameplates that ranked in the top 5, Buick, Honda and Mercury while Buick and Lexus tied for first place.

Lexus garners five segment awards -- the most of any nameplate in 2007 -- for the GS 300/GS430, GX 470, LS 430, LX 470 and SC 430. Toyota follows with four segment awards for the RAV 4, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra. Ford, Honda and Oldsmobile each capture two awards. Ford models receiving awards are the Crown Victoria and Mustang (in a tie), while Honda earns awards for the Civic and S2000. Oldsmobile models receiving awards are the Bravada and Silhouette. Models by Buick, Chevrolet, Infiniti, Mazda and Scion each rank highest in one segment.

The study also finds that vehicle models with strong dependability may retain up to 15 percent more of their value after three years, which may increase their purchase prices when sold as used vehicles. In particular, vehicle models that demonstrate strong dependability lose their value less rapidly compared with vehicles that are not as dependable. With higher residual value, dependable vehicles may command higher purchase prices on the used-vehicle market. In addition, vehicles with higher retained value can be important assets to automakers and dealerships, which may be able to sell a dependable vehicle two to three times during its life cycle.

The study also finds that approximately 65 percent of vehicle owners experience one or more problems that require components to be replaced. Owners who have problems that require component replacements within the first three years of ownership are considerably less satisfied than owners who don't need to replace components. Satisfaction is decreased further if owners are required to replace a major component, such as a transmission, as well as if minor components, such as brake pads, need to be replaced frequently. Component failure and the accompanying decline in satisfaction can lead to decreased customer loyalty. Owners who experience component failure expect to keep their vehicle approximately one year less than do owners who experience problems but do not need to replace components.

The 2007 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 53,000 original owners of 2004 model-year vehicles. The study was fielded from January through April 2007.

Acura May Receive Diesels

Of course, Honda has announced plans to introduce the 2.2L 4 cylinder clean diesel for the next-gen Accord in 2009. Honda has also discussed about the diesel V6. Now it appears that one or both of the engines will show up in the Acura lineup, at least in Japan, by 2010. If the diesels prove popular in North America, we may see diesel Acuras here as well.

Honda Builds World Parts Hub

Honda is going to set up a parts consolidation centre in Thailand.

Thailand's Board of Investment recently approved promotional privileges for Honda Trading (Thailand) Co to set up the centre to procure both locally and foreign-made materials, parts and components for Honda factories worldwide, said BoI deputy secretary general Hiranya Sujinai.

The planned centre would serve as a procurement and logistics centre for Honda subsidiaries worldwide.

The state-of-the-art warehouse would be built on a site covering 10,500 square metres at the Rojana Industrial Park in Ayutthaya.

The warehouse, she said, would be the first of its kind for the Honda Group in Thailand as a facility to distribute products worldwide. After Honda Trading received orders overseas, it would start sourcing materials, parts and components at home and abroad, of which 70% would be procured from local sources that would help local suppliers generate 8.14 million baht revenue per year.

''This project will help turn Thailand into the centre to procure parts and components from local and foreign suppliers for the automotive industry. Computerised online systems will be used to manage the inventory and programmes to control product quality and packaging to bring it in line with the required standard,'' said Ms Hiranya.

Honda Trading, part of Honda Trading Corporation of Japan has a core business of machinery import and export, equipment, auto parts and components for automobiles including motorcycles for Honda subsidiaries worldwide.

Honda News

Honda has raised incentives on the Accord in China to the same level in the US hurting profit from affiliates this year. "Competition is getting very severe,'' said Chief Financial Officer Fumihiko Ike in an interview at the Honda's headquarters in Tokyo yesterday. ``We expect lower earnings from affiliates due to falling profit in the Chinese auto market.''

Honda is offering incentives of at least 20,000 yuan ($2,640) on the Accord in the world's second-largest auto market, because of increasing competition from Toyota Motor Corp.'s Camry model. The automaker cut its full-year profit forecast for affiliates, including those in China, by 15 percent last month.

Honda is currently offering incentives of $3000 on Accord Sedans in the US with the starting price at $18,625 US.
