The 2013 Acura RDX, the second generation of Acura’s five-passenger crossover SUV, will up the ante with a new approach to achieving both advanced performance and fuel efficiency via a new engine, transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

The 2013 RDX rides on a 4-wheel independent suspension with a MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension design. A longer wheelbase, wider track and lower center of gravity provide the foundation for the new RDX’s improved handling and ride quality. New chassis technology for 2013 includes Acura-exclusive Amplitude Reactive Dampers and a new Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering system that replaces the previous hydraulic steering.

The 2013 RDX will be available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants. Standard features for 2013 RDX include bold new 5-spoke 18-inch wheels and improved 4-wheel disc brakes that include an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Not only do the brakes provide better performance, but they also incorporate improvements to lessen brake drag for reduced rolling resistance and improved fuel economy.

Replacing the turbocharged 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder used with the previous RDX, the 2013 RDX will now have as standard equipment a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 273 horsepower— 33 more than the outgoing model. For even higher performance and improved fuel economy, the RDX makes use of an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter. The RDX also gets a new, lighter weight all-wheel-drive system that provides outstanding performance and safety with increased efficiency to achieve higher fuel economy.

With an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy rating of 20/28 mpg, front-wheel-drive versions of the 2013 RDX are expected to offer the best fuel economy of any gasoline-powered V-6 luxury SUV in the class. All-wheel-drive models will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 19/27 mpg.

The RDX boasts a sleek and more aerodynamic body, evolving RDX from a sporty, compact SUV to a more formal SUV appearance with a longer, sculpted hood and styling that is more elegant and sophisticated to match the Acura philosophy of timeless, beautiful design.

Inside the 2013 RDX, new sweeping shapes, matte surface trim, and generous use of leather combine to give the RDX interior an upscale look and luxury feel that Acura customers have come to expect. Abundant use of sound deadening materials and Active Sound Control team to provide an exceptionally quiet cabin. Additional interior features, such as larger door openings, more passenger room, increased cargo volume and an available power rear tailgate make the RDX interior even more accommodating and flexible.

The 2013 RDX will receive a host of new technologies including Pandora® internet radio interface, SMS text message feature, a Keyless Access System with smart entry and pushbutton start, and a three view rear camera. Passenger safety has always been a cornerstone of every Acura model. In addition to using Acura’s acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, the 2013 RDX employs new design features and myriad high strength materials aimed specifically at occupant protection. The 2013 Acura ILX compact sedan is an all-new model that is positioned as the gateway into the Acura brand. The primary target customers for the new ILX are Generation Y— successful 20 and 30-somethings moving into the luxury car ranks but looking for high-value propositions in their purchases.

“First-time luxury buyers tend to place a high value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues, and that's what we have created with the new Acura ILX,” said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. “The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market.”

Sleek and sporty, the ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency. While maintaining a strong emphasis on stylish and aerodynamically efficient exterior design, the ILX features a large and airy greenhouse that provides excellent outward visibility. As a five-passenger luxury sedan, the ILX combines compact proportions with a spacious passenger interior and ample cargo space— perfect attributes for young professionals on the go.

The ILX will feature three advanced, sporty and efficient powertrain choices, including Acura’s first-ever gas-electric hybrid. The entry-level ILX will be powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine producing 150 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 140 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm.

Paired with a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission, the ILX 2.0L will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 24/32 mpg.

For those who seek a more dynamic driving experience, the ILX can be equipped with a 2.4-liter engine with an output of 201 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 170 lb-ft torque at 4,300 rpm. Mated to a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission, the ILX 2.4L will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 20/29 mpg.

Marking the debut of Acura’s first ever hybrid model, the ILX Hybrid makes use of a 1.5-liter inline engine and an Integrated Motor Assist® electric motor. Paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the ILX 1.5L Hybrid will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy rating of 35/38 mpg.

The hybrid drivetrain uses the gasoline engine as the primary power source, while an electric motor provides additional power when needed. A lithium-ion battery pack is used to capture and store electricity for the 20 horsepower electric motor. Together, the gasoline engine and electric motor produce 111 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 127 lb-ft of torque between 1,000-3,000 rpm. During braking, the gasoline engine deactivates and the electric motor acts as a generator to recharge the battery pack. At a stop, the 1.5-liter engine can enter idle-stop mode to save fuel and reduce emissions. The engine remains off until the brake pedal is released.

The ILX chassis utilizes advanced MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems, along with new Amplitude Reactive Dampers. The dampers operate in two distinct performance parameters to simultaneously provide superior ride comfort and precision handling.

In addition, Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering is used for excellent steering feel and improved fuel efficiency. The result is a chassis with a high level of refinement, confident handling and a nimble and sporty driving experience.

The ILX will feature a high-quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sporty. It will offer a number of new, high-value features including a standard Keyless Access System with smart entry and pushbutton start, along with Pandora® internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

As with all Acura models, the ILX will have a long list of standard features, multiple trim levels (a Premium Package and Technology Package), and excellent standard safety features— including Acura’s acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, front, side and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel anti-lock brakes and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®). Investing in Ohio

Honda said Wednesday it will invest $98 million at its largest auto engine plant for the western Ohio facility to produce components for its new transmission technology.

The engine plant in Anna will make high-tech pulley components for Honda's new continuously variable transmission, or CVT, aimed at improving fuel efficiency. Honda announced $120 million in investments last year for the production of the CVT at the plant in nearby Russells Point.

Honda said the two combined investments for building next-generation powertrain technologies will create 150 new jobs.

"The production of this new CVT technology puts the Buckeye State right in the middle of Honda's global strategy," Hide Iwata, president and CEO of Honda of America Manufacturing Inc., said in a statement.

The Russells Point plant is expected to start making the CVT this summer, with pulley components from Japanese operations. The Anna plant will begin manufacturing those parts next year.

The CVT technology is part of Honda's "Earth Dreams" powertrain technology, which will launch in the U.S. in 2013 Accord models coming out later this year, the company said.

"Our associates have incredible experience and we are counting on them to help us introduce an even higher level of powertrain technology for our customers," Anna plant Manager John Spoltman said in a statement.

The Anna plant employs 2,400 people and annually makes more than 1.1 million engines for two auto productions plants in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio, and operations in Indiana and Canada.

The Russells Point plant, which has 1,050 workers, makes automatic transmissions and four-wheel-drive assemblies for cars and light trucks. Its third assembly line is under construction as part of the previously announced investments, which include an expansion for aluminum casting operations to support the production of the new transmission.

Overall, Honda has about 13,500 Ohio employees in manufacturing, support, research and development and other operations. It has announced more than $500 million in investments at four Ohio plants since late 2010, the company said.

The 2012 Civic more than tripled its sales numbers in January 2012, up 333%

Combined January sales of 9,168 units by the Honda and Acura divisions represented a 127% increase over last year's sales. The Honda Automobile Division reported January sales of 8,451 units, up 144% from last year, led by strong January sales of Honda Civic (up 333%), Honda Fit (up 178%) and Honda CR-V (up 127%). The Acura Division reported January sales of 717 units, up 25% over last year, bolstered by a 155% monthly increase in sales of Acura TL.

"The exceptional Honda sales numbers for January are due in large part to sold orders of Civic from the latter part of 2011 that we were able to deliver in January due to the recent ramp-up of production, " said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "However, we saw a strong increase of more than 127 per cent of CR-V sales in January, led by the highly anticipated all-new 2012 CR-V that went on sale at the beginning of January. We thank all of our Canadian customers for being so patient with us through the final months of last year during the supply disruption caused by Japan's earthquake and tsunami and the Thailand flood situation.

"We are proud to report that the new CR-V is now in full production at our assembly plant in Alliston, Ontario. It joins Civic, Canada's number one-selling passenger car, which is also produced at our Ontario plant. Combined together, the Canadian-built CR-V and Civic represent about 70 per cent of Honda sales in Canada."

CR-V sales are through the roof, this is USA's best-selling SUV

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today reported January 2012 monthly new-vehicle sales of 83,009, an increase of 8.8 percent over January 2011. The Honda Division posted January 2012 sales of 74,628, an increase of 9.3 percent year-over-year.

In its first full month of sales, the all-new Honda CR-V set a January record with sales of 18,960, up 16.0 percent over last year's record-setting total of 16,339. The Civic also continued to build momentum with sales of 21,883, up an impressive 49.5 percent compared to January 2011. The Accord posted January sales of 13,659, up 1.5 percent from the same period last year. Honda's Ridgeline pickup posted its second consecutive month of double-digit sales growth, up 45.6 percent year-over-year to 1,245 units.

"Honda's return to full strength on the manufacturing front is already beginning to pay dividends on the sales floor," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. "On top of kicking off 2012 with record January sales for the new CR-V, it's gratifying to see how many Civics we can sell when we actually have Civics to sell. It's great to see customers embrace this great vehicle now that our dealers have enough cars on their lots."

The Acura Division's January sales totaled 8,381, up 5.3 percent compared to January 2011, with two models registering strong sales increases. Sales of the TL sedan reached 2,283, up 43.4 percent from the same period last year, while TSX sales totaled 2,266, a year-over-year increase of 16.7 percent.

2011 Honda Japan Production Down 20%

Japan's Honda Motor, the country's third-biggest carmaker, suffered a 20 percent plunge in its global production last year, it said Friday.

Honda made 2.91 million vehicles not including motorbikes in 2011, it said, down 20.2 percent as auto manufacturers struggled with natural disasters, a rising yen and the European economic slowdown.

The figures came as Japan's major car firms announced their annual production for 2011.

Toyota, which had already confirmed earlier this week it had lost its position as the world's biggest carmaker, said it produced 7.86 million vehicles, down 8.2 percent.

Nissan, 44.3 percent owned by French partner Renault, was the only leading Japanese carmaker to increase annual global production despite supply chain disruption from the country's earthquake disaster and floods in Thailand.

It produced 4.63 million units, up 14.3 percent from a year ago, while global sales hit a record 4.67 million vehicles, it said.

Mitsubishi Motors, the nation's fourth largest automaker, produced 1.14 million vehicles, a 2.8 percent drop.

New Brand Strategy

Acura is looking towards a new brand strategy called Man Machine Synergy. This philosophy is a branch of Honda's motto: man maximum, machine minimum. According to Honda Canada, this means, "when man and machine connect, the extraordinary happens." This strategy was actually developed during the 2008 economic crisis that forced Acura to refocus on its plans including cancelling the NSX sportscar. Furthermore, the idea of Man Machine Synergy is to use technology to enable and enhance and make Acura a prestigious and desired brand by matching the wants and needs of buyers with products along with an overall premium experience at the dealership. Acura will be following 6 business principles, 1. using Honda origin to deliver value, 2. offer products with a farsighted vision and social benefits, 3. deliver an overwhelmingly beautiful design, 4. develop strategies to communicate brand image, 5. offer superior customer car and 6. work within a stable and sustainable business model. Acura's goal remains to become a Tier-One luxury automaker but will do so by sticking to the core brand values of Acura and not chasing other manufacturers.

A new Concierge Experience was briefly noted but was not elaborated upon. Acura's 25th Anniversary was celebrated last year commemorating Acura's 25 years in business.

RL To Debut in New York

Acura has confirmed that the next-generation RL will premiere at the New York International Auto show in April. The car will continue to use a V6 but will not have an innovative Hybrid AWD system called Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. The system makes use of two electric motors in the rear individually powering each wheel mated to a 7-speech dual clutch transmission and an engine with direct injection. Acura Canada says that the result of this combination is V8 power with 4-cylinder economy. The new RL's looks will be fairly similar to the current model but will have a more rear-drive design and large rear fenders and a similar Hoifmeister kink akin to the ILX. Interior dimensions will increase. Acura Canada says the result of this will be a 7-Series interior with a 5-Series exterior.

One thing to note however, the RL will NOT come standard with Sport Hybrid SH-AWD meaning another drive configuration will be available as well. Rumors point out to the tried-and-tested FWD configuration.

Following a disappointing 2011 in sales, Honda is looking for inspiration to boost brand strategy and consumers by investing in a 28 million euro campaign promoting the new Civic UK.

The ad is called the Great Unknown and it centers on a spark of inspiration at a Honda factory. The spark passes through a series of adventures before revealing the new Civic UK hatchback. The activity launches in 2 days and will be supported by a trio of interactive experiences including Follow Happy, a game that tracks the thought process of Honda engineers.

Honda designed this campaign to look upon the unknown with optimism and helping to improve Honda's overall brand image across Europe. Looking at Honda's 20.5% decline in 2011 sales in Europe, it definitely needs some optimism to look ahead.

Honda will be introducing the Jazz Hybrid to Malaysian consumers in the first quarter this year. Honda is looking to woo Malaysian consumers interested in becoming green. The Sports Car Club of America's B-Spec class continues to grow in popularity and Honda is taking note and is committed to the series. Honda's Performance Development or HPD believes that it is a part of Honda's cornerstone to establish a connection between Honda's passenger cars and the racing cars the evolve from these models.

Starting February 1, 2012, Honda will unveil a line of manufacturer-approved suspension components for the Honda Fit available through HPD. The kit includes coil-over shocks, front and rear race springs, cat-back exhaust, performance front brake pads, camber bolts, braided stainless brake lines, air filter and an A/C delete belt. Owners are responsible for their own roll cage, racing seats, harness and other safety equipment.

Earlier last year, Honda announced a 4-cylinder Crosstour to grace the Crosstour lineup. The 4-cylinder model officially went on sale this week. The base EX 4-cylinder with the venerable 2.4L 4-cylinder making 192hp is priced at $27 655 excluding an $810 destination fee. The base model includes heated side mirrors, Bluetooth, a backup camera, 7-speaker stereo and a 10 way power driver's seat. The EX V6 starts $2685 more at $30 340 with Active Noise cancellation, dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lights, chrome door handles and a 4 way power passenger's seat. At $30 705, you can purchase a EX-L 4-cylinder with dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, 4 way power passenger's seat and a leather interior.

It appears that Honda America is planning a major advertising spree for the 2012 CR-V during the Superbowl. Honda will be featuring the SUV in a commercial during the 4th quarter of the Superbowl on February 5th centering on Honda's Leap List advertising campaign on the CR-V. Honda did not advertise on the Superbowl last year. Rumours are that the commercial will feature actor Matthew Broderick reprising his Ferris Bueller character. The Superbowl ad could be a turn of the page for Honda which is looking forward to closing a book full of disasters in 2011.

Canadian CR-Vs Begin Rolling Off The Line

The first batch of Canadian-made 2012 CR-Vs rolled off the Alliston assembly line earlier this week. To mark the occasion, a special line-off ceremony was held at Plant 2 where four associates dressed in white coveralls drove a new black CR-V from the end of the line to the welcoming stage. They were joined by 100 applauding plant employees. Honda's CR-V is the fourth vehicle to grace Alliston with the Civic, MDX and ZDX being produced as well. The CR-V replaces the Acura CSX in the plant assembly line. Honda's CR-V is produced in 10 countries including Mexico and Thailand so assembly lines require a lot of flexibility and cooperation. New Tecumseth Mayor Mike MacEachern spoke at the event, speaking of his pride and honor for Honda's dedication and partnership in the region. He said that Honda's CR-V production in Alliston would not only benefit the local community but the country as well.

Honda Fit EV Begins Life

Honda is beginning a slow but steady rollout of the new all-electric 2013 Fit EV. Three Fit EVs have been delivered to Google, Stanford University and the city of Torrance in California ahead of a public unveil this summer. These 3 cars will be part of a demo program that will provide advanced research and driving feedback for Honda to use in future electric cars and powertrains. In Torrance, the Fit EV will be used in various departments such as management and parks and recreation to learn the strengths and practicality of having an all-electric car in the fleet. For Google, the Fit EV will be part of the company's alternative-power car share program. Stanford will be using the Fit EV as part of a research project to investigate the behavioral aspects associated with the adoption of new technology.

The public will be able to lease the Fit EV first in California and Oregon because they have the highest number of early adopters and charging infrastructures. Availability will expand to East Coast markets by the Spring of 2013. The Fit EV is only offered in a three-year lease with an estimated cost of $399 per month.

Prospective owners can visit the Fit EV website and sign up. The vetting process for potential lessees include the applicant's lifestyle and how an electric vehicle would come into use.

The Fit EV is powered by a 92kw electric motor and a 20kw hour lithium ion battery. It has a driving range estimated at 76 miles combined city and highway driving on a single charge.

The 2013 Accord is expected to be a key model for Honda's success in 2012-2013

Honda's President Takanobu Ito forecasts that business results at Japan's third biggest carmaker will climb to the highest they have ever been in at least 5 years, lead by the sales of the Accord and Civic models in North America. The 2013 Accord, 2013 Civic and CR-V will help Honda increase US sales by 24% to 1.43 million units in 2012. According to Ito, business results in the year ending March 2013 will recover to the levels achieved before the massive slump caused by the failure of the Lehman Brothers. Sales will climb to above 4 million cars for the first time. Ito also says that Honda's North American sales will lead the recovery.

Honda's stock in Tokyo has steadily gained up to 15% this year already, the best performance of the top 3 automakers in Japan. Compared to last year's 27%, Honda is making steady strides. Adding to this, Honda's operating income will double to $7.6 billion dollars in the next fiscal year after shrinking 52% since the collapse of the Lehman Brothers.

Although Honda is in a good position to recapture lost market share, it should be noted that they are not the only one in this position. Hyundai, albeit strong, has seen production shortages due to their plants working at full capacity and that issue will be addressed while GM and Ford have steadily increased their market share this year.

Ito expects China to be a forerunner in aiding Honda's sales. Honda is expecting a 20% increase in sales to 750 000 units in 2012. Honda is also planning to resume production at its Thailand assembly plants in April.

Locally at home in Japan, Honda is revising strategy so that all the local Japanese factories will focus primarily on building minicars/keicars. The new N-Box keicar has seen 27 000 unit orders in the first month of sales, double Honda's original target. These kei cars will now account for more than 40% of Honda's Japanese sales. Abroad, Honda is planning to boost the portion of vehicles sold in the same region as they are built to as high as 80%.

The Honda NSX originally went on sale in 1990 and aimed on capturing a supercar market across Asia. It followed the standard recipe of a mid-mounted engine sending power to the rear wheels. As you would expect from a manufacturer like Honda; lots of development went into the engine, with Honda finally deciding on a lightweight V6 petrol powered unit. This was coupled with well-engineered VTEC technology allowing variable valve timing amongst other driver aiding performance enhancements, making it far more advanced than other sports cars of the time.

It wasn’t until 2005 when the NSX finally went out of production, leaving behind a legacy of Japanese sports car production. The sales never set the world alight, and the performance struggled to match that of manufacturers such as Porsche and Ferrari who seemed to churn out a new model every other year, leaving the NSX to age and fall behind. That said, The NSX offered an alternative to European supercars and this was one of the key selling points. There were various carnations of the model throughout its life including a facelift towards the end of 2003 for a final sales push. A type S mode, Type R and Alex Zanardi Edition were also added to the range which both included weight reductions and a lower ride height, coupled with specialise racing rims and removal of power steering. The Zanardi edition was only built 51 times to commemorate his wins in the 1997 and 1998 North American Champ Car racing series.

After a hiatus of 7 years (although there was an NSX racing car on the track since then) Honda has treated us with designs for a concept NSX that they expect to deliver to us within 3 years. This was an exciting day for Honda fanatics around the world, with a new Japanese supercar (to join the Lexus LFA) trying to take on the world.

Honda is describing their new concept as, “the ultimate expression of synergy between man and machine”. There were earlier plans to base a future NSX on a powerful V10 engine, but those ideas have since been quashed under Honda’s pledge to environmental responsibility. We can expect to see the same combination of rear wheel power and a mid-mounted V6 engine. Honda are also hinting that the model could even be hybrid too, with twin 27bhp motoring powering each of the front wheels.

Honda confirmed that although branded a ‘concept’ at the Detroit motor show, they fully intend to put this model into production, so the hype can begin now for future potential owners. If you’re looking for Honda contract hire in the meantime, then now is the time to get in before the launch of the new NSX comes by.

Honda is set to unveil two new Jazz models in Australia, called the Vibe and Vibe-S in order to supply Australian dealers and consumers with Jazz models while the Thailand plant continues to dig themselves out of the mess created from the Thailand flooding last year. Local supply of the Jazz has been very slow and the Vibe/Vibe-S will be a temporary plug-gap solution to the problem, replacing the GLi, VTi and VTi-S models until Honda Thailand's production plant is back up running.

The base Jazz Vibe includes alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift-knob, steering wheel audio controls, rear spoiler, power-retractable side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators and illuminated drivers and passengers vanity mirror. It is available with both a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic.The Vibe-S adds larger alloy wheels, sporty bumpers and side skirts along with a larger 1.5L engine. Unfortunately, it is only available with a 5-speed automatic.

Fortunately, both models include standard Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, height adjusting driver's seat, power windows with driver's side one touch up/down and VSA with Traction Control.

The Vibe variants will be on sale starting in February.

Resuming Production

Honda Philipines has announced that it has resumed production after overcoming supply disruptions from the Thailand flooding earlier last year. HCPI has said it is ready for production of the new revised 2012 Honda City. The plant had shut down two months ago due to a limited parts supply from the Thailand area. The HCPI plant in Laguna assembles the local Honda City and Honda Civic models. Honda Jazz and Honda Accord models are currently not available for purchase because they are produced in Thailand and Thailand's plant is set to be back up and running in mid-February.

Affected by two of last year’s most devastating natural disasters -- the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the massive flooding in Thailand -- Honda Cars Philippines proudly proclaimed “Honda is Back” with the launch of its new City.

The company proudly took the wraps off its enhanced third generation sedan for 2012 on Tuesday night.

“True to our promise to ‘Forever Change the Rules,’ we enhanced, refreshed and redesigned the City based on the understanding of the customers’ needs and wants,” Tatsuya Natsume, president and general manager of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., said.

The new Honda City features a freshly designed chrome grille, new front and rear bumpers, redesigned taillights and a set of 5 split-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels for the 1.5-liter variant.

Inside, the manufacturer has added audio controls to the steering wheel and blue-and-white illumination to the instrument cluster, as well as an “Eco Drive” indicator lamp, which lights up whenever the driver is driving efficiently.

Furthermore, Honda announced that all variants of the Honda City will be equipped with dual (driver and passenger) SRS airbags, and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) as standard.

The Honda City variants are equipped with i-VTEC engines in 1.5L and 1.3L displacements, 5-speed automatic transmission and fuel economy meters (average and instantaneous readout) and paddle shifters (1.5 E AT only).

First launched in the Philippines in 1996, the Honda City continues to be the company’s best-selling model with approximately 68,000 units in the Philippines. Like the rest of the Honda line-up, the City is also Euro IV emissions compliant.

Three variants of the 2012 Honda City will be available with the following prices: 1.3 S MT at P746,000; 1.3 S AT at P786,000 and 1.5 E AT at P836,000.

Honda unveiled the dynamic Accord Coupe Concept today at the North American International Auto Show, providing the first official glimpse of the athletic styling direction, as well as revealing a host of new technologies for the all-new, ninth-generation 2013 model, set to go on-sale this fall.

The 2013 Accord will feature three all-new powertrains, including the first U.S. application of both a 2.4-liter direct-injected engine and two-motor plug-in hybrid system from Honda's suite of next-generation Earth Dreams™ powertrain technologies. Design and Packaging

The Accord Coupe Concept features an athletic styling direction for Honda's best-selling model. The front bumper's dynamic lines are highlighted by a revised four-sided honeycomb grille and deeply set multi-reflector headlights. Lower fog-light spoilers are accented by crystallized chrome inlays.

The Accord Coupe Concept's 20-inch, machine-finished, 5-spoke wheels contribute to its solid stance. The rear taillights aggressively sweep into the body, while a trunk -lid spoiler and large exhaust finishers integrated into the bumper underscore the Accord Coupe Concept's muscular exterior.

While the Accord Coupe will remain similarly sized, the Accord Sedan will feature a more compact exterior footprint, adding to its sportier appearance. A shortened wheelbase and reduced weight will also give the 2013 Accord Sedan more responsive handling and improved driving dynamics. Both the 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will retain the current model's generous cabin space.

Advanced and Efficient Powertrains

The Accord will offer three all-new powertrains for the 2013 model year. The Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will be the first models in the U.S. to receive the new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC® four-cylinder engine featuring direct- injection (DI). The engine will be paired to a new Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT), which utilizes an innovative 'G-Design Shift' cooperative control system for excellent acceleration and responsive shifting. The all-new 2.4-liter DI engine generates significant performance improvements compared to the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine it replaces, producing more than 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. In addition to an overall improvement in fuel economy compared to the 2012 model, the new four-cylinder-equipped 2013 Accord models are targeted to deliver class-leading fuel economy1.

The 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will also be offered with a re-engineered 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V-6 engine, paired to a new 6-speed automatic transmission or an available 6-speed manual transmission. The new V-6 engine generates an increase in horsepower and torque over the current model. The 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission will utilize Honda Variable Cylinder Management ™ (VCM™) technology and are targeted to achieve class-leading fuel economy1 along with an overall improvement in fuel economy compared to the outgoing model.

The 2013 Accord lineup will also feature the first application of a new two-motor plug-in hybrid system to the Accord Sedan. The Honda two-motor hybrid system moves continuously through three modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and direct-drive - to maximize driving efficiency and fuel economy.

In all-electric mode, the 2013 Accord Plug-In Hybrid will use a 6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and a powerful 120 kW electric motor to achieve an all-electric range of approximately 10-15 miles in city driving scenarios and a top speed of 62 mph. Fully recharging the battery will take less than four hours using a 120-volt, outlet and less than 1.5 hours using a 240-volt charger.

In the gasoline-electric hybrid mode, the Accord is powered by its fuel-efficient 2.0-liter, i-VTEC inline four-cylinder, Atkinson cycle engine, paired with an electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT). For more efficient high-speed cruising, the Accord Plug-In Hybrid can engage in a direct-drive mode, in which only the engine drives the front wheels. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid will launch next winter.

All 2013 Accord models will incorporate the Honda ECO Assist™ system, an innovative technology that can enhance efficient vehicle operation at the touch of a button, while also providing visual feedback to the driver to promote and confirm a more efficient driving style.

Safety and Technological Innovations

The 2013 Accord will introduce numerous new features for enhanced driver safety, visibility and security. The new Accord will be available with Honda's first application of Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Forward Crash Warning (FCW) technology. Both systems use a camera mounted behind the windshield to alert drivers if the car is moving out of its lane or to warn drivers of a potential collision in front of them. The 2013 Accord will be the first Honda model to apply a side curtain airbag with a wider deployment profile to enhance ejection mitigation. This application is two years in advance of new safety regulations going into effect in 2015.

The 2013 Accord is targeted to earn top scores in both the federal government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety2 (IIHS) vehicle evaluations.

Additionally, the Accord will be equipped with several new technologies to help improve the driver's visibility around the vehicle. Here are some tidbits that we've learnt about the NSX since its introduction. If you were worried whether or not Honda was serious about producing a v2.0 of the NSX, consider this: Honda's CEO, Takanobu Ito worked on the team that developed the first-generation NSX's all-aluminum chassis. He called that job one of his most important projects of his life at the point. A nice reminder of Honda's enthusiast roots. Hopefully, they won't go away.

Some of you may also be wondering why the NSX is being built in Ohio and not in Japan like the first-generation NSX? (FYI: Honda has an engine plant, transmission plant, assembly plant and a R&D centre located in Ohio) The reason to this is that Honda is now committed to building cars in the market in which they are sold. The U.S. market will be the NSX's largest market followed by Japan. Another reason why the NSX will be built in Ohio is the positive press response to the product development of Honda's other North American market-only vehicles (Odyssey and Pilot). The third reason why Honda is building the NSX in the US is Honda has faith in the quality of its Ohio production assemblies and wants to take advantage of the expertise offered at the plant. Production of a halo car would also increase morale and generate motivation for its workers.

Honda's US CEO denied the fact that the strong yen was a factor in moving the production of the next-generation NSX to the US because the limited-production nature of the NSX renders the strong yen effect moot. Whether or not it's built in the US or Japan, Honda's CEO affirmed that the main focus is to bring the NSX back to market with its advanced technology, superb quality and outstanding performance.

Better Times Ahead?

Honda is looking to put a year of unprecedented difficulties behind it and boost sales in the United States, its biggest market, by a quarter in 2012, executives said on Monday.

Japan's No. 3 automaker suffered big disruptions to its supply chain both from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami at home and the historic floods in Thailand, leading to a plunge in production, sales and inventory in many markets.

In the United States, its sales fell 6.8 percent in a market that grew by 10 percent, as its North American production returned to normal only last month.

"We had a major handicap last year, but this year we're hoping to build up inventory to healthy levels in the first quarter and run full-speed at the latest from April," Honda North America President Tetsuo Iwamura told a small group of reporters at the Detroit auto show.

Honda is targeting a 25 percent jump to 1.43 million vehicles in U.S. sales this year, including a 46 percent rise for the struggling Acura brand to 180,000 vehicles.

Honda was also battered by poor reviews for the new Civic rolled out last year, with the influential Consumer Reports magazine ranking it second from the bottom among the small sedans that it rated.

Still, as production slowly returned in the final months of last year, Civic sales recovered in tandem, placing it back at the top of the compact sedan segment in the last quarter, Chief Executive Takanobu Ito said.

"A lot has been said about the Civic, but (the final quarter's performance) demonstrated to us the strength of our relationship with customers and the brand that we've built over the years," Ito told reporters in Detroit. "Of course, we need to polish our cars more, whether it's the Accord or the Civic."

Honda's Accord will be fully remodelled with the automaker's new generation of fuel-efficient powertrains later this year.

Shown as a prototype version of the 2013 RDX, the second generation of Acura's five-passenger crossover SUV will up the ante with a new approach to achieving both advanced performance and fuel efficiency via a new engine, transmission and all-wheel drive system.

The 2013 RDX, scheduled to launch in Spring 2012, will have as standard equipment a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 273 horsepower- 33 more than the outgoing model. For even higher performance and improved fuel economy, the RDX makes use of a 6-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter. The RDX also gets a new, lighter all-wheel-drive system that provides the required performance and safety with increased efficiency.

With anticipated EPA fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, front-wheel-drive models of the 2013 RDX are expected to offer the best fuel economy of any gasoline-powered luxury SUV in its class.

The RDX exterior incorporates a sleek, more aerodynamically efficient body, evolving RDX from a sporty, compact SUV to a more formal look with a longer, sculpted hood and styling that is more elegant and sophisticated to match the Acura philosophy of timeless, beautiful design. Honda Australia Cuts Prices on the 2012 Odyssey

Honda Australia has launched a facelifted 2012 Odyssey with a freshened front end, new LED rear lights, a revised interior instrument panel with new silver metallic finish for the door handles and centre panel and several new technologies. Along with that, Honda Australia has also given it a $2000 price cut. The base model now starts at $37 100 and goes up to $44 920 for the Luxury top-of-the-line variant. All Odysseys now receive a touch-screen satellite navigation system, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, Honda's new Ecological Drive Assist Program, steering wheel shift paddles and a rearview camera as standard equipment.

The 2012 Honda Odyssey continues with the tried and tested 2.4L 4-cylinder engine making 180hp and 218N/m of torque with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Sales were dismal in November 2011, with only 97 sold.

Honda Siel Cars of India continues to face production problems and sluggish sales following a disruption of components supply to the Thailand production facility. The Thailand floods earlier in 2011 has hit Honda Siel Cars of India hard, creating severe sales shortages and severe production constraints. However, Honda has said that deliveries and production of the revamped 2012 Honda City will begin at the end of this month.

Honda Siel Cars of India has had a bleak month in December 2011, compared to the 5000+ sales made in the same month in 2010, 2011 reported a little over 1000 sales.

Honda's Promise

Many readers may know that Honda has taken quite a beating lately on its new vehicle introductions, ranging from the CR-Z, to the Insight and more recently, the 2012 Civic. Honda's president, Takanobu Ito wants to change that and is doing so by explaining the faults of the past and how he's going to change these faults.

In an interview with The Nikkei, Ito explains that Honda's previous product planning method was made up of 6 regional operations responsible for their own region. Whenever Honda as a whole developed a product for the global market, they listened to every one of the 6 regional operation supervisor. This created problems wherein Honda watered down vehicle characteristics to increase the mass-market appeal. Ito admits that when you harmonize all the different opinions from the 6 regional operations, you end up with a safe and boring car.

Under Ito's reign, he changed the system by appointing three corporate officers to supervise the development of luxury, midsize and compact vehicles. He asked these officers to create more competitive vehicles and increase communication between product planning and regional operations. He says that the fruits of his achievements will be shown to the world beginning next fiscal year.

Ito says that those fruits include cars that will be both environmentally friendly and safe along with cars that are highly distinctive. Sporty driving characteristics will be incorporated into the DNA of every Honda vehicle.

In an effort to move away from Honda's dim present, Ito's plans are the light on the horizon.

Honda's 2012 Fit: Best Value for New Small Car

According to new research done by Consumer Reports, Honda's subcompact-car, the Fit remains Consumer Report's number one best value among small cars. Not only that, but it is CR's number one best overall value among the 200 different vehicles analyzed.

CR's automotive editor says that a low price doesn't make a car a good value, it's what you get for your money at that price that makes it so. CR took into account, the performance, reliability, depreciation, insurance premiums, fuel costs and ownership cost data to produce these rankings.

BREAKING NEWS: 2013 Acura RDX Spotted in China!

Judging by these photos, it definitely appears to me that the new RDX is heavily based off of styling cues from the MDX. Take a look at the front end and it's a scaled-down, watered-down version of the current MDX front-end styling. Surprisingly, the A/B-pillars have adopted a CR-V styling influence and according to Honda, we are set to see a MDX-like C-pillar design. The rear looks like it's taken some cues from the Audi styling book.

Regardless, we are set to see the next-generation RDX at the North American International Auto Show this coming Monday, January 9th.

Honda Motor Co plans to adopt new design and assembly methods to make its vehicles lighter, the Nikkei business daily reported.

Some of Honda's new manufacturing methods involve welding outer panels to the frame, rather than assembling the ceiling, side and other panels, to reduce the use of bolts and reinforcing materials, the Japanese newspaper said.

Honda plans to spend tens of billions of yen to revamp production lines in Japan and overseas, using the new methods on small vehicles initially, then on all models within several years, the Nikkei said.

The automaker has begun steps to scale back on materials, parts and processing steps for producing its minivehicle, the N Box, which was launched last Friday, the daily said.

Honda modified one of the two production lines that assemble the N Box at its Suzuka plant in Mie Prefecture, the Nikkei said. The move will help make the N Box 10 percent lighter and lower manufacturing costs, the paper added.

By making lighter and cheaper automobiles, the carmaker aims to fast track its advance into emerging markets, which is one of its top priorities, the newspaper said.

Following distasteful and lackluster reviews of the new 2012 Honda Civic, Honda's much-reported refresh of the Civic is coming sooner than we expected. Honda is set to fast-track typical mid-model changes to appear in the 2013 edition of the Civic. These MMC changes include reworking the chassis and suspension, a restyled front and rear end, enhanced comfort, emphasis on interior build quality and including additional standard features. This is Honda's part to achieve a plan to boost US sales by 24% next year. Honda is planning to boost Acura US sales by 43% to 180 000 units a year. Meanwhile the new Civic has topped KBB's annual list of the most researched cars on its website followed closely by Honda's Accord in second place.

2006-2011 Honda Civic Hybrid Gas Leaks

Those who own a second-generation Honda Civic Hybrid may be familiar with a possible fuel leak that has spread through a few models of the venerable compact sedan. In order to avoid a recall, Honda has opted to extend the warranty of the models that have shown signs of small gas leaks to satiate customers. The potential leak exists where the fuel filler meets the tank and possible small leaks throughout the fuel pump. NHTSA is looking into the safety matter. The new warranty Honda will slap on is a 10-year/120 000 mile warranty, far more than the typical 3-year/36 000 mile warranty but less $ spent for the automaker than issuing a recall.

Honda Canada Unveils 2012 CR-V

Honda's 2012 CR-V is set to debut in Canada on January 4th and will start at $25 990, $300 less than the 2011 version while retaining more than $2500 in additional feature value. Honda Canada is also getting an exclusive CR-V Touring priced at $34 990 featuring Honda's upgraded Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and chrome door handles + roof rails.

Swindon Expansion

Honda has begun the production of the new Civic Euro in Swindon, UK. Production levels are returning to normal in the UK and is expecting a significant production increase next year. Honda UK will also be hiring 500 new employees at the Swindon plant and is successful about the prospects of success in the future.

Two new four-cylinder, two-wheel-drive Honda Crosstour® models are set to go on sale next month, broadening the vehicle's appeal through a lower price point and EPA-estimated fuel economy that increases 3 mpg1 in the city and 2 mpg1 on the highway.

Honda Tops at IIHS

The list of winners of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award is longer than ever this year, with vehicles in nearly every size category the Institute evaluates earning accolades. From minicars to sedans to pickups, consumers have a record number of choices among 2012 models.

In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, 5 minivans, and 3 pickups earn Top Safety Pick. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in Institute evaluations. The ratings, which cover all 4 of the most common kinds of crashes, help shoppers pick vehicles that offer the highest levels of crash protection. Because the federal government now requires all 2012 and later passenger vehicles to have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid loss-of-control crashes, ESC no longer is a requirement to win as it was in prior years.

The winners' circle includes 18 new recipients for 2012, while 97 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award carry over to 2012.

"For the second year running a record number of models qualify," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "It's tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority."

That commitment to protecting people in crashes is evident in the fast pace of design improvements automakers have made during the past year. Initially 66 vehicles qualified for last year's award as less-than-perfect rollover ratings held back many contenders. Later the number climbed to 100 as manufacturers redesigned roofs to make them stronger or introduced new models to win. The Institute's rolling test schedule allows for recognition of additional winners throughout the year, so many 2012 models qualified for a 2011 Top Safety Pick.

Again this year every major automaker has at least one winner. Subaru remains the only manufacturer with the distinction of earning awards for every model it builds. Subaru picks up 5 awards, including one for the redesigned Impreza, a small car.

Toyota/Lexus/Scion has 15 winners for 2012, more than any other auto manufacturer. General Motors is next in line with 14, followed by Volkswagen/Audi with 13, and Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura with 12 awards apiece.

Honda improves: Ten of the 18 new additions are Honda/Acura models, including the midsize Accord sedan, which hasn't earned Top Safety Pick since the Institute toughened criteria to win the 2010 award by adding a test to assess roof strength in a rollover crash.

Vehicles rated good for rollover protection have roofs more than twice as strong as the current federal standard requires. The Institute estimates that such roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 percent compared with roofs meeting the minimum requirement. A new federal standard for roof strength will phase in beginning with 2013 models.

Roofs on the 2009 Honda CR-V and 2010 Pilot scored marginal ratings in prior Institute tests, while earlier models of the Accord, CR-Z, Fit, and Insight rated acceptable. Now all of these 2012 models earn good ratings and Top Safety Pick.

"Honda/Acura deserves credit for most-improved status," Lund says. "The automaker buckled down and upgraded roofs on 10 models that missed winning last year because of rollover protection. Now, the automaker has winners in the minicar, small car, midsize car, small SUV, midsize SUV, minivan, and large pickup categories."

Another midsize sedan, the Toyota Camry, earns its first-ever Top Safety Pick. Last year, the Camry missed the mark because of a marginal rating for seat/head restraints. The Toyota Yaris also earns its first Top Safety Pick award. Toyota upgraded the roof and seat/head restraints of the 4-door hatchback model to win. Good ratings secure the Yaris a spot alongside 3 other minicars, the Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, and Honda Fit, as 2012 winners.

"It's great to see the Accord and Camry, 2 of the top-selling midsize cars in the U.S. market, join the Top Safety Pick ranks this year," Lund says. "The Accord previously won the 2009 award but has been missing from the list since then."

With fuel efficiency and reduced emissions on many buyers' wish lists, the winners' circle includes more green choices. Toyota's all-new Prius v is among them. Roomier than the original, the v hybrid brings to 15 the number of winners available as hybrids. The plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, winners in 2011, also earn this year's award.

For drivers who need to haul loads, the Ford F-150, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tundra are good choices in the large pickup category. Small pickups continue to be shut out. None the Institute has evaluated qualify for the award.

"When we launched Top Safety Pick in 2005, consumers had 11 models to pick from. Six years later, finding a winner that fits most budgets and lifestyles is easy," Lund says. "It's a testament to the commitment automakers have made to going above and beyond minimum safety standards."

About the award: The Institute awarded the first Top Safety Pick to 2006 models and then raised the bar the next year by requiring good rear test results and ESC as either standard or optional equipment. In 2010, the Institute toughened criteria by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a good rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.

The Institute groups winners according to vehicle type and size. Lund advises consumers to keep in mind that size and weight influence crashworthiness. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford better occupant protection in serious crashes than smaller, lighter ones. Even with a Top Safety Pick, a small car isn't as crashworthy as a bigger one.

How vehicles are evaluated: The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.

Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2 instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a 5th percentile woman, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact.

In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a displacement rate of 0.2 inch per second. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a 2-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry - the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man.

Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people.

Honda China Recall

China's consumer quality watchdog said Thursday that Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co has decided to recall 2,270 Civic sedans manufactured between Sept 26 and Nov 17.

Dongfeng Honda said workers forgot to install self-locking nuts in the steering boxes of some vehicles. Therefore, the steering wheels are likely to rotate right when they are turned far left, posing safety risks, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said in a statement on its website.

The automaker promised to check all affected vehicles, replace defective parts free of charge and eliminate other risks.

Honda Siel Cars Launching Cheaper City

After cutting prices on its 2012 City Sedan by 66,000 Rs, Honda Siel Cars of India is cutting the price again by 50,000 Rs, bringing it to level with the Vento from VW and the Hyundai Verna. Honda is battling rising competition in the midst of production delays caused by the Thailand flood. The new entry-level City will cost Rs 6.99 lakh.

Honda Siel Cars of India claims that they have not cut the price on the City but have offered a new lower entry variant with a lower price.

Without a diesel engine which is a popular choice for consumers in the India market, Honda may continue to find a hard time to find buyers for the City in an increasingly competitive market.

Meanwhile new bookings for the Jazz and Brio hatchbacks have been temporarily closed due to continuing parts shortage stemming from the Thailand flood. No word on when they will allow consumers to order cars again.

The information in this post was taken from a debriefing with reporters following Acura's announcement of the models to be presented at the NYIAS show next year.

Acura's New Flagship (potentially named Legend, may be phasing out RL) - Late 2012

Acura is saying that it will redefine smart luxury with its new flagship model saying that it will offer best in class legroom but will be smaller on the outside. Think BMW 7-Series cabin space but with the agility of a BMW 5-Series is what Acura's Product Planning VP says. Images were projected during the meeting and it appears that it does bear a strong resemblance to the current RL but the styling is wrapped around a much more luxurious package. A conservative and clean design will be offered that is subtle but not very exciting either. The wheelbase is slightly longer but there are some moderate overhangs with a Hoffmeister kink on the C-pillar. Exhaust finishers will be integrated in the lower rear bumper and there will be LED elements in the front headlights. The new Legend/RL will feature the electric SH-AWD promising V8 performance with better than 4-cylinder fuel economy. Model to be featured at the NYIAS Show next year.

Acura's RDX - Mid-2012

Honda has decided to put in a V6 for the next iteration of the RDX with more horsepower and much better fuel consumption that should address the awful turbo fuel consumption of the current model. A new and more light-weight AWD system will be replacing the SH-AWD system in the compact SUV. It turns out from the photos given that the RDX now bears a stronger resemblance to the MDX and has a similar C-pillar section. The majority of the hatchback now shares a subtle and a flat look compared to the current version with some MDX elements scattered through the car.

Acura's NSX Concept - TBA

The concept that Acura will be unveiling next year at the Detroit Auto Show is almost the same car that was spied on the Avengers set last month but is further developed and in the hard-top form. This will carry the same NSX tradition of a mid-engine, RWD layout and has styling cues similar to the Audi R8. There are 5 squircle projecters in each front headlight with a flying buttress C-pillar that can channel air more smoothly around the cockpit of the car. Acura also announced that a new engine with a new layout will be planned for this vehicle as they claimed that their Electric SH-AWD and 3.5 DI V6 was not powerful enough. It should be noted that the combination of the V6 with the 7-speed dual clutch can have a peak of 400hp. Perhaps the new NSX will generate near 500hp but Acura did not provide any other details.

Acura's ILX (sub-TSX) - Late 2012

Acura also previewed its new small entry level luxury compact that will show up at the Detroit Show next year. The key design element with this vehicle is the pronounced crease that starts in the doors and curves up over the rear wheelwells and the inclusion of the Hoffmeister kink in the rear C-pillar. It has a relatively long nose, stubby rear deck and a high beltline. More photos to come when the car is released. The ILX will be offered with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission and a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The 1.5L IMA Hybrid engine will also be featured in the model. Acura's ILX may be in showrooms by next summer.

Goodbye TSX?

With the introduction of the ILX and the placement of the RL, Acura has several overlapping models in its entry level luxury car category. The ILX, TSX and TL will all be overlapping each other in some sort. Acura has clearly stated that it will go with a 3-sedan, 2-SUV strategy so between the TSX and TL, one of them will be forced to clear the way. Perhaps it will be the TSX? Or the TL? Either way, the situation stands in several perspectives, the ILX may replace the TSX, the TSX may replace the TL or a new model may replace BOTH the TSX and the TL. We'll keep you updated.

Acura announced today that it will unveil three all-new vehicles at the 2012 North American International Auto Show including an all-new compact sports sedan, a redesigned RDX crossover SUV, and a concept version of the next generation Acura NSX super car.

The Acura ILX Concept is a styling study of an all-new luxury compact sedan scheduled for launch in spring 2012. To be positioned at the gateway to the Acura lineup, the ILX will feature three powertrains including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid. Acura also will unveil a prototype of the 2013 RDX, the second generation of Acura's five-passenger SUV. Finally, Acura will debut the NSX Concept, which represents the styling direction for the next generation of Acura's super sports car.

"Acura has a steady cadence of exciting new models coming to market and it will all begin in Detroit," said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura sales and service. "From the all-new Acura ILX at the gateway of the lineup to the pinnacle of performance with the Acura NSX Concept, Acura vehicles are being created for luxury customers who aspire to the highest levels of quality and value, with beautiful styling and the right balance of technology, performance and environmental responsibility."

Honda has just released the 2012 Honda CR-V stateside with an average price increase of $181, however Honda says that the average consumer will be getting over $1000 extra in equipment for their money. The base LX now starts at $23 105 including the $810 destination fee and the top EX-L AWD now starts at $29 805 with the EX-L AWD NAVI starting at $30 605, down $300 from the 2011 model. An easier fold-down rear seat, an SMS text messaging dictation function, increased power and fuel economy all make up the extra $1000 in equipment.

EV-STER Bound For Production?

The latest rumor to come out of the Honda doors is that the EV-STER concept seen at the Tokyo Motor Show may be going into production. The concept is a kei-car and is essentially the same size as the Honda Beat. It is powered by a 78-hp lithium ion motor and can hit 60km/h in 5 seconds with power going to the rear wheels. The electric car has a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 100mph. No word on the production size or power of the gas engine.

Honda Battles TrueCar

Honda is embroiled over a fight between its dealers and prices being displayed over at TrueCar.com. Honda has told dealers that it will not give them allowances for advertising if they continue to advertise vehicles below invoice on TrueCar.com, an internet auto sales service. Honda thinks that disclosing the cut-rate prices is damaging the brand and is making dealers compete with one another for buyers rather than with other automakers. What the deal with TrueCar is, is that the prices at which dealers are willing to sell cars at, are disclosed to all the visitors on the site. TrueCar is owned by several of the US' largest auto shopping services.

Honda's part of the issue is that it wants to protect its brand image and support pricing. Honda's attempt to withdraw its dealers from participating in this website extends to Acura dealerships. Advertising allowances that may be cut can allocate up to $600 a vehicle.

Industry analysts say Honda's decision may backfire as Honda shoppers that access the website will notice that there are no longer any Honda vehicles on the website and they will simply move to other brands / dealerships who are advertising their cars on the site, including Honda's competitors, Toyota and Nissan.

Canadian Honda Fits to be Exported from China

In a move that may see some cost-cutting, Honda has started to export variants of the Fit to Canada from a China local plant. Up until now, Honda has exported the Fit from Japan but in eye of the Japanese earthquake, Honda says the move is towards maximizing production capacity and be able to have multiple production bases shoulder numerous responsibilities in order to help each other in case of a crisis. Honda is aiming to reduce the production of exports in Japan to 10-20% over the next 10 years from the current 30-40%.

Honda's Fit sales in Canada are very small due to the success and the "nourishment" of the Civic line in Canada, Fit sales have totaled only 2 700 since the start of 2011.

American Acura/Honda Sales for November 2011

Honda Division posted November sales of 74,016, a decrease of 9.9 percent versus November 2010. The Pilot continued its momentum with sales of 10,487, up 32.6 percent. The Civic was the top-selling Honda model for November with sales of 17,133, a decrease of 0.7 percent compared to last year. The CR-V posted sales of 16,426, a decrease of 13.7. The Accord posted sales of 14,355 a decrease of 17.9 percent.

"The impact of the Thailand flooding on our North American production levels continued to be felt in November," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. "We're looking forward to closing the year on a strong note as production recovers and the all-new CR-V goes on sale this month."

Acura Division recorded November sales of 9,909, a decrease of 11.2 percent versus November 2010, and year-to-date sales of 110,170, down 7.1 percent. The MDX was the top-selling Acura model for the month with November sales of 3,308 down 24.2 percent. The TSX posted record November sales of 2,691.

Canadian Acura/Honda Sales in November 2011

Combined November sales of 12,655 units by the Honda and Acura divisions represented a 16 per cent increase over last year's sales. The Honda Automobile Division reported November sales of 11,112 units, up 18 per cent from last year, led by record November sales of both Honda Civic and CR-V. The Acura Division reported November sales of 1,543 units, up 7 percent over last year.

"November marks the first month since March that Honda Canada has seen a year-over-year sales increase. Now that we are returning to normal production levels this month at our North American plants, we are looking forward to business as usual," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc.

North American Production Normalizes

Honda says that 6 US and Canadian plants will return to normal production levels today after having to adjust output again earlier this month due to floods in Thailand. However, flooding in Thailand will continue to have impact on parts supply and suppliers will be affected. A few electrical parts from Honda vehicles made in the US were sourced from Thailand hence the slight impact in production.

Compact on the outside and roomy inside, the CR-V represents an ideal balance for size and capability in the entry SUV segment. Powerful and Efficient 4-Cylinder Engine
Leading the changes are a more efficient engine design with improved horsepower and torque, along with an all-new Real Time All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) with Intelligent Control System. All CR-Vs are powered by a 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower and 163 lb-ft. of torque paired with a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy is rated at 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined (FWD) (an increase of +2/+3/+2 mpg compared to the 2011 CR-V), and a compact SUV-class leading 22/30/25 mpg city/highway/combined (AWD) (an increase of +1/+3/+2 mpg compared to the 2011 CR-V). Eco Assist, a new feature on the CR-V for 2012, indicates to the driver when the vehicle is being operated in an efficient style via “green” visual cues surrounding the speedometer, and a selectable ECON Mode alters operating characteristics of the vehicle to support an efficient driving style.

New Standard Features
New for 2012 standard features include an Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seat and a range of standard technology features. New high-tech features on all models include a Bluetooth HandsFreeLink phone interface (previously an available feature), a full-color intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) and a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines. As a first for Honda, every 2012 CR-V includes an SMS text messaging function, which can read received texts from compatible cell phones aloud over the audio system. Another first is the introduction of a Pandora Internet Radio interface, compatible with the Apple iPhone, which works with the vehicle’s audio controls and i-MID.

Model Range
The CR-V lineup starts with the CR-V LX model, now with more standard equipment for 2012. The CR-V LX is equipped with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, i-MID, remote entry, a 160-watt, a 4-speaker audio system, Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS). The CR-V EX adds an upgraded six-speaker audio system, power moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and more. The CR-V EX-L builds on the rich features of the CR-V EX and adds a leather-trimmed interior, 10-way power driver’s seat, automatic dual-zone climate control, 360-watt 7-speaker audio system with XM Radio and much more. Available features for the CR-V EX-L include the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition and FM Traffic, or a DVD Rear Entertainment System (not available with Navigation). Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is an available feature on each model.

Design
The 2012 CR-V body adopts a more dynamic and sophisticated appearance compared to the previous generation. The CR V’s spacious interior layout is more accommodating with a roomy new center console (now standard) and an overall lower cargo floor height for easy loading and unloading. The new Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seat makes accessing the full capability of the cargo area much more convenient than traditional folding seats. Each side of the rear seat can fold nearly flat into the front of the cargo area using one of the release levers located near the tailgate, or a pull-strap positioned on the seat side.

Safety
Every CR-V incorporates as standard equipment VSA, an electronic stability control system; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist; side-curtain airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); and a front seat design that can help reduce the severity of neck injury in the event of a rear collision. An Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure in the front of the vehicle helps make the vehicle highly effective at absorbing and dispersing the energy of a frontal crash.

Honda's Small EV Concept looks to be a futuristic EV version of the Beat or CR-Z convertible. It appears for now that this could be the concept successor to the S2000 or the Beat. Honda's Micro Commuter Concept is a battery-powered city commuter that would be accessible to the masses if produced. This would bring the EV accessibility down to everyone. Although vague, Honda states that this car will offer a new type of communication between people and mobility and will feature an easily customizable exterior. Surprisingly, Honda's Motor Compo electric bike will fit into this car.

Honda will debut a next-generation plug-in hybrid vehicle at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show in December 2011. This vehicle will be comfortable and enjoyable during all driving situations including urban and long-distance driving. There are two drive modes to choose from including the engine drive mode for an aggressive drive and an automatic drive mode for relaxed driving. The front and rear aprons (lower bumpers) can be raised or lowered to increase aerodynamic efficiency.

On the interior, Honda's Smart Connect system, (Smart Key) will make its entrance. This Smart Key will not only help start the vehicle but will tell the charge of the car's battery and is the size of a smartphone. Joysticks are in place of a steering wheel with a panoramic 3D heads-up display spread across the dashboard.

Thailand Fears

Honda placed hope in its new sub-low-cost Brio car ... but floods have given this story a dark ending

Honda car dealers across Thailand are bracing themselves for a considerable drop in business following production shutdowns in the country. The plant in Ayutthaya remains submerged and is expected to be submerged for the rest of 2011 and half of 2012 at least. There is no clear date to resume operations. An industry source says that Honda's plant will not be operational until next May if the floods do not recede considering the fact that Honda needs time to assess the plant damage and work on replacements/repairs if needed. Honda's parts suppliers across Thailand have also been shut down and/or submerged by the floods, causing Honda's overseas production plants to cut production.

Honda dealerships could be without cars for up to 5 months in Thailand. Honda wants the Thai government to wave foreign-built vehicle import duties to help its dealers but rival carmakers argue that no one company should be allowed these special privileges. This move would be unlikely as well because the government would lose millions of dollars in duties.

Honda's Accord, CR-V, City, Jazz and Brio are made at the Thailand plant.

US to Korea

Honda is considering to import vehicles from the US to Korea. A formal announcement on the matter has not been made but the Japanese automaker confirmed that it is evaluating the move. Honda's decision to import vehicles to Korea from the States would combat the rising strength of the yen which has made Japanese goods less cost-competitive and profitable. With the KORUS FTA, the Free Trade Agreement between the States and Korea in sight, Honda intends to make full use of the reduced tariffs coming out of the agreement.

Honda's Accord sold in South Korea is already sourced from the States but models such as the CR-V, CR-Z, Insight and Civic come from Japan. Part of Honda's move can also be blamed on the Japanese earthquake which has caused tremendous industry losses for Honda and vehicle market share in Korea.

Following the launch of the new 2012 Civic, Honda used the SEMA show to announce news surrounding the ninth-generation model and to debut a prototype Accord sporting a supercharger.

For the regular road-going enthusiast is the Civic Si Coupe HFP (for Honda Factory Performance). The dealer-installed kit includes a HFP sport suspension which lowers ride height by 15 millimeters and adds stiffer springs, shocks and 18-inch HFP wheels with Yokohama AVID W4S tires.

The Civic Si Coupe HFP is also the first product on which HFP has collaborated with Honda's in-house racing arm, Honda Performance Development (HPD) to test and verify the package's performance improvements on the track compared with those of the stock Si. According to Honda, the relationship between the two will further strengthen on future products.

To dress up the outside, the HFP kit includes a front lip spoiler, side sills and a rear bumper underbody spoiler, while the interior gains LED ambient lighting. The entire package retails for $4,244 and carries a three-year/36,000-mile warranty when installed at the time of the new-car purchase.

For the track warriors, Honda had a race-prepped 2012 Civic Si coupe prepared by Compass360 Racing, which had its first shakedown run at the World Challenge season finale at Road Atlanta in September. In hopes of expanding its racing presence, HPD will offer the Civic coupe body-in-white for $3,500, which will save potential Civic Si racers from having to purchase a fully equipped stock vehicle and tear it apart. To date, Honda has sold close to 10 bodies, which can be fully built up through HPD's parts catalog that includes engines built by longtime Honda/Acura racers RealTime Racing out of Wisconsin.

Finally, Honda showed off an Accord coupe V6 concept outfitted with the HFP package with upgraded suspension, body kit and rims. The concept part of the equation comes from a HFP-tuned supercharger, intake and exhaust system. Estimated output figures according to Honda come in at 333 hp and 285 lb-ft of torque, which is up from the stock V6's output of 271 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque.

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama is looking to add at least 50 new employees to their payroll. That move to add positions will support on-going projects and is increasing speculation that the company will be boosting capacity and revamping assembly operations, to build the Acura MDX Sport Utility Vehicle. Last spring, Honda announced plans to move production of the vehicle to Alabama from Canada. The Lincoln plant already produces the Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline, and the V-6 engines which power them.

Except a new version of the 4-cylinder, the choice of 2WD or 4WD and the 6-speed auto remains a possibility.

For those that are anticipating the arrival of the new CR-V in early December, be prepared. The new CR-V will not hit dealerships until late January 2012 because of supply problems from Thailand. Slowdown ... Again

After an announcement on the recovery of production in North American plants, Honda is preparing for the worst after floodwaters ravaged Thailand. A dramatic international slowdown is en route for the automaker whose Canadian plants are suffering from parts shortage. 6 North American factories will be cut to 50% of the original plan for about a week. It will cancel Saturday overtime work throughout November and schedule a non-production day on Remembrance Day. During Honda's non-production days, employees can either report to work, use a vacation day or take the day off without pay or penalty.

This is the second time that the Japanese automaker has been plagued with production problems, the first one being the massive Japanese earthquake that plummeted Honda's production levels.

Canadian Acura/Honda Sales in October 2011

Combined October sales of 11,232 units by the Honda and Acura divisions represented a 13 per cent decrease over last year's sales. The Honda Automobile Division reported October sales of 9,760 units, down 12 per cent from last year. The Acura Division reported October sales of 1,472 units, down 15 per cent over last year.

"While we had just returned to full production in October after a 6-month disruption caused by a parts shortage from the March earthquake in Japan, we are now faced with another parts shortage resulting from the devastating floods inThailand," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "Honda has announced that it will temporarily adjust automobile production at all of its Honda vehicle assembly plants in Canada and the U.S. Vehicle production will be at about 50 per cent of the original plan for all Honda and Acura vehicles through November 10. Subsequent adjustments will be announced as they are determined, based on the parts supply situation.

"We express our deepest sympathy and concern for the victims of the floods in Thailand with the sincere hope for the earliest possible relief and recovery. Also, we deeply regret any inconvenience this production disruption may cause to our customers. We are working closely with our suppliers and operations throughout the world to overcome this situation as quickly as possible."

American Acura/Honda Sales for October 2011

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted October sales of 98,333 vehicles, an increase of 3.3 percent, the company announced today. American Honda year-to-date sales reached 958,130, down 5.3 percent versus last year, based on the daily selling rate.

Honda Division posted October sales of 87,218, an increase of 3.2 percent versus October 2010. Honda trucks posted October sales of 44,852, an increase of 12.3 percent due to strong sales of the Pilot, CR-V and Odyssey. The Pilot showed the largest sales gain for October, with sales of 12,466, up 58.5 percent. The CR-V posted a sales increase of 11.2 percent on sales of 19,326 and the Odyssey posted a sales increase of 8.6 percent on sales of 10,415. The Accord recorded sales of 22,589, up 9.4 percent and the Civic, posted monthly sales of 16,173, down 1.9 percent.

"As dealer inventories continued to replenish in October, we saw increased momentum over last month’s sales," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. “We look forward to continued strong demand for our products despite these continuing challenging times due to the flooding in Thailand and ensuing production limitations.”

Acura Division recorded October sales of 11,115, an increase of 4.8 percent versus October 2010, and year-to-date sales of 100,261, down 6.6 percent. The MDX was the top-selling Acura model for the month with October sales of 3,691 down 2.8 percent. The TSX posted record October sales of 2,977, an increase of 37.3 percent.

Honda’s strong reliability record and reputation for high quality products has helped the new Civic secure impressive residual values and improved insurance group ratings, ensuring the 2012 Civic will have some of the lowest running costs in the C-segment.

Based on a three year/60,000 mile profile EurotaxGlass’s predicts the 150PS 2.2 i-DTEC ES will retain 42 per cent of its cost new price over a three year/60,000 mile period.

CAP estimates that both the Civic 150PS 2.2 i-DTEC ES and entry-level 100 PS 1.4 i-VTEC will achieve a trade value of 38 per cent of their original cost new price. This equates to £8,050 and £6,175 respectively.

“We have worked really hard to improve the way we communicate our new models and the new Civic is the first model to benefit from this work. Our target was to have all the relevant new vehicle data including pricing, SMR and insurance groupings with the data providers in time for the data to be packaged and released on the day the car was unveiled at Frankfurt – and we achieved it,” commented Ollie Parsons, National Leasing and SMR Manager, Honda (UK).

Longtime Honda driver Joe LoCicero of Norway, Maine, has logged a million miles in his 1990 Honda Accord. To mark the occasion, the car maker, which had been in contact with LoCicero and tracking his progress for some time, even set up a surprise parade for him.

Of course there are other drivers who have gone that far in cars from other companies. Car makers like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz have occasionally used such feats in their marketing campaigns for years. Still, a million miles is an extraordinary distance in a car.

Indiana Plant Production Increases

Honda's refreshed Insight is now making its way to U.S. dealerships with redesigned 15-inch wheels, a redesigned front fascia and an improved interior. Fuel economy on all models have been improved to 41/44mpg city/highway, an improvement of 1mpg each on both city and highway thanks to friction reducing measures done in the engine and the CVT transmission. Noise insulation has also been beefed in the new Insight by up to 2%.

Insight Base

Honda's 2012 Insight base now starts at $150 higher at $19 120. Rear-seat headroom has been improved by 0.6 inches and the instrument cluster has been revised along with a slimmer rear wiper motor and rear spoiler to help increase rear visibility.

Insight LX

The LX model is up $225 from the 2011 model starting at $20 895. Upgraded seat fabric and a more supportive front armrest are the new features on this trim level. Otherwise, the LX carries over a 4-speaker sound system with a USB audio interface, floor mats, map lights and new this year, a security system and steering wheel audio controls.

Insight EX

The most value can be had in the new Insight EX, up $325 in MSRP to $22 585. Automatic headlights, synthetic leather and fabric and a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob adorn the interior. Otherwise, paddle shifters, alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, a 6-speaker sound system all carryover from last year. The navigation system is now priced at $1725, down from $1775 last year and includes a rearview camera. A 16-GB flash memory system is used in the new system compared to the old hardware DVD-based 4.7GB.

Honda's 2012 Civic hasn't been having a great time with critics lately, or rather, ever since its introduction. With complaints over a hard dashboard, warmed over exterior styling, unchanged engine and chassis components and the dilution of Gen 9's sportiness, there is no wonder that Honda is considering a refresh for the new 2012 Civic as soon as December 2013. Rumors are that Honda will come out with a more refreshed and aggressively styled Civic in response to dealer complaints and concerns over the new Civic. It also appears that the 2013 models will see changes to the Civic LX model with upgraded interior materials across the line and improved wheels and tires for the LX trim level, if you didn't remember, this was the model that was bashed endlessly by Consumer Reports. Russia in Honda's Eyes?

Honda has Russia in its eyes for a new assembly plant. However, this venture will cost the company several billion yen to produce 30 000 - 50 000 vehicles annually. Honda has already submitted the plans to the Russian government and started talks with officials. The location of the plant is being consulted and it will use components shared and imported from global facilities. Honda sold only 18 000 vehicles in Russia last year with tariffs of 50% and more. But Russia's car market is expected to double in sales in the next few years. Looks like Honda's gamble might pay off.

NSX Back On Track?

Word is that Honda's R&D boss has confirmed the development of the NSX. However, the major catch this time around is that it will not be solely gas-powered, EV OR a hybrid option will dawn the heart of Acura's halo car. He claims that it would be an interesting project, an economical vehicle that is electric or hybrid. Honda Siel Cars of India has announced that it will be ramping up capacity at its Greater Noida plant by 20% with the existing capacity raised to 120 000 cars annually. Only minor investment will be involved with the additional capacity. Honda is also looking to develop and produce local diesel variants of its vehicles while Honda is projecting that its new subcompact cheap minicar, the Brio will contribute 10% to local Uttar Pradesh markets. Honda is about to start a second production shift in southeastern Indiana that builds the Civic sedan and Natural Gas model after the onslaught of hiring almost 1000 new employees. This new shift will be put into place at the Greensburg factory on October 24th and will double the plant's workforce and increase annual production to 200 000 vehicles.

Earlier in the year, Honda cut production in half at the Greensburg plant due to the tsunami impacting worldwide production but normality has since been returned to the plant last month. Thankfully, no workers were laid off in the downtime.

Honda's Greensburg plant is the exclusive plant to build the 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas. Honda believes it will be selling 4x more than before considering it is expanding the availability of the model from 72 Honda dealers in 4 states to 200 dealers in 36 states.

Honda in Thailand has plans to ask for a government meeting to discuss relief measures for the company and its operations in Thailand following a massive flood that devastated its operations in hopes of reducing the impact on 10 000 of its workers. Honda says that the benefits will extend to the country's economy as a whole. Honda is working hard to find ways to resume operations as fast as possible so that the least amount of parties are affected.

The recent disruption has also hit exports from Honda's manufacturing plant in Thailand creating a limited export stock. Honda continues to be confident about Thailand as a manufacturing base and Honda is urging the government to launch effective measures to prevent floods from damaging production sectors.

Since a massive flood last week, Honda has had to cut major production capacity and temporarily suspend part of production in its Rojana Industrial Park plants in Ayutthaya.

When Honda will be able to resume production will depend on when the government can drain the water out of the Rojana Industrial Park.
